Why! why would you actually make me think about this? This is like asking an alcoholic or smoker to add up how much they spend on their vice, it brings nothing but guilt and shame!
Getting pretty close to $10k for this year. I don't regret a penny of it. And I bet I'm not even close to the top end off spending on this hobby.

It's too painful to talk about. Luckily I'm not into golf or sailing.

if i actually had the cash to spend what i wanted on cycling, i could see it getting out of hand pretty quickly...and i've only just gotten my first bike in the last couple of weeks.

Year to date... A little north of $30,000 but that includes two new road bikes and I'll more than likely buy a new cross bike for the fall before the end of the summer. My normal annual bike spend is closer to 10-15,000 but it's been a good year.

My biggest cycling expense is gasoline.

Descends like a rock
Between $300 and $4000 depending on the year. The year the whole family all got new bikes was pretty expensive (it was also the year I quit driving to work). I have hardly spent anything this year. I'm pretty happy with my bikes, I have all the cycling-specific clothes I need, I have good, working sets of lights. Its just maintenance for the near future. I even have a pretty decent stash of spare tubes. Oh, I did replace the rims on a set of wheels that were starting to crack. That's probably been my biggest bike expense so far.

I would think an average over the past few years is better to guage how much we're actually spending. I don't buy a new bike every year and the intial few years are filled with buying everything under the sun. Now that I'm happy with just about everything it's just maintenance, so a couple hundred for a new chain and tires is a light year, replacing/upgrading will obvisouly increase the average. I'll also be buying a mtn bike this year, but set myself a modest budget.

my god some of you are spending about what I make. This year I have spent ~1k. New wheels were about $550, new group is about $400, add $50 for other stuff I cant think of. It will probably go up another $500 hopefully (thats it) for the rest of the year...about to take a big pay cut with a new job

You guys blowing all this money obviously did not hear that Twinkies are coming back.
Come July, you may have shiny new Zipps, but I'll have delicious cream filled cakes....and only one of us will be truly happy.

About $150 per year for "consumables" -- chains, tires, tubes, bar wrap, chain-lube, patch kits. Maybe another $125 per year (on average) for new shorts, jerseys, gloves and helmets. Add another $125 per year (on average) for replacing worn out or broken components -- brake pads, cables, etc.
So, I'd estimate about $400 per year to keep two road bikes in operable condition.

not enough. I'm a 'low buck cyclist'. I bought my road bike Memorial Day wkd in 2010, since that initial outlay of cash I have bought 1 additional jersey, a pair of thermal pants, a floor pump, two tubes (replaced my first one yesterday coincidentally), a tire lever, a new Cateye Strada Wired on ebay ($16 to my door), a pair of gloves, a bottle of chain lube and a spare polar bottle. that is 2 full seasons of riding plus the beginning of this one. probably have spent about $200 in the past 2 years aside from the initial purchase of the bike.
however, the spending is coming, a Garmin is on the menu, a new saddle, some bibs, new tires and maybe wheels next spring if $$ allows.

It was scary expensive the first few years. I would think about 5-6 thousand. Recent years it's just consumables and has dropped to $500/yr. I am maintaining 2 bikes of my own and 2 of the wifes. Just buying stuff like tires, chains, lube now.

Between bikes and camera gear... I turn a blind eye to the shoe/purse/spa appts/skin care & makeup/clothing budget too though. Neither one of us goes absolutely crazy but it's not worth getting into a nickel and dime contest either.
