Bamboo frame? Wtf?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone seen these Bamboo frames that boo bicycles are making or does anyone own one? If you have not heard of them check them out boobicycles.com

Are these things safe what's their life span and is it worth $2000+ ?

Hi, modern bamboo bikes have been around for a few years. Haven't heard anything bad, but also haven't heard a lot of good. They don't experience spontaneous combustion like carbon frames.

One of my regular riding buddies got one a little over a year ago. He loves it. The bike seems to be holding up, but it hasn't been that long. It's not what you would call a light frame...

I seem to remember some company called BO or BOO and their bikes were in the 16 or 17 pound range. Glued together bamboo joined to aluminum lugs, like early carbon bikes from Giant.

I don't see the point to bamboo bikes. They don't seem to have any advantages or to be able to do anything better (or even as good) as any other bike. Just a novelty, and an expensive one at that.

I heard about them from a show I was watching called Triple Rush, which was about bike messengers in NYC. One of the guys on the show also had a side company that made bamboo frame bikes. When I googled them they looked pretty cool. Their prices are way out of my price range tho. I also stumbled upon a site that teaches you how to make your own.

The guy from 30 bananas a day rides one. He's a freakin moron (in general, not because of the bike) but the dude can ride and puts some serious miles on his.

The advantages are not in the performance of the bike, but rather the sustainable & renewable material that it's made out of. That, and they look and are works of art.

I would love to get a bamboo frame, but then again -- I like bikes that (almost) nobody else has. If you're going to spend the type of $$$ that modern bikes cost, you might as well get something that stands out.

Keep 'em away from termites. Also, throw a bamboo bike out in your back yard and your dog will fetch it. Crashes may result in some wicked splinter removal. Survivalists love bamboo bikes because, when caught out in the wilderness in winter, they've got a ready source of firewood.

So another use is if you crash out in the boonies, you can just smoke the thing to pass the time until you're picked up.

Bamboo or wood is mostly carbon so it still may.
