When did REG bottle cages switch to Aluminum?

When did REG bottle cages switch to Aluminum?
Or maybe this was only offered a few years.

As far back as the early to mid eighties from what I remember. We sold the aluminum ones in our shop back then. FWIW, they kinda sucked as the crimps eventually loosened.

Yup!, the REG aluminum bottle cages were built more for light weight and not durability.
If you want a durable and stable aluminum bottle cage from the 80's, the Blackburn standard race cage will be a better choice.

Cobra also branded one similar to the alloy REG cage. And later TA saved money and also made ( maybe marketed only) a similar version.
As noted the crimps did not hold well.

I hate crimped cages like that. They scratch up your bottles.

What also marrs waterbottles is the aluminum the cage is made out of. Stainless steel bottle cages are supposed to be easier on plastic waterbottle surfaces and graphics.

Minoura welded cages are currently my retro-look favorite, but I agree with you—for a period build, the Blackburns are the way to go. The PC-1 was only 38 grams! (The Minouras are 39 grams).

Not really. Aluminum cages, themselves, have never marred my bottles. My cages are painted anyway. I’m talking about actual gouges that are caused by the sharp edges of the crimping. They really dig into plastic bottles.

I rarely mount cages on a bike that I restore. I carry my water in my backpack, which travels with me and my chosen ride every time. That said, I recently picked up a Marinoni fitted with a set of bottle cages. Anyone recognize these..?
In an effort to preserve the history of the bike, I just might put them back on when I do the refurbishment, But that Brooks Champion's gotta go. Saddle bag will not be reinstalled either...
