Good Afternoon All!

I figured I would make a post since I just rejoined these forums. I used to frequent this site about 12 or so years ago, but can't remember my old login for the life of me. Therefore, I made a new account to go along with my new road bike.

Since my time of leaving the forums I have inconsistently been riding. I bought a single-speed 29'er about 8 years ago and would ride that from time to time. A little over a month ago I got back into riding and ended up putting about 130 miles on that mammoth of a bike. I decided that I wanted a bike that would better cater to my new riding style (longer distance road biking) and picked up a Specialized Allez last week. I do have a few questions:

1. Can I remove the plastic guard behind the rear gears? Is there a purpose to this? Is it so the chain does not slip off when on the highest gear?

2. I am 5'9 and got a 54cm frame. While the stand over height feels right, I do feel a bit stretched out when hands are positioned on the riding levers. I'd imagine this is because my 29'er had a more upright position with my riser bars and that is what I'm used to. I'm hoping my body will get used to it (already swapped in a 90mm stem) but if not, I guess I will have to do some experimenting with a shorter/higher stem. Anyone else make the change from a MTN bike to a bike with more aggressive geo and found themselves in a similar situation?

I am happy to be back in the biking community and look forward to learning a lot from this site!

-Brandon

I'm unsure how to respond on the plastic disc, Brandon. You used to frequent these forums and are an experienced rider. Are you joking or not?...that is the question. If not...I believe you'll likely find information if you search 'dork disc' (not that I'm making any kind of judgment, you understand). I imagine you'll find all sorts of interesting commentary.

I've rode single-speed bikes for the past 15 years. Never had one of them on a bike before. But now I'm excited to read all about the "dork disc".
