Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Visiting my folks yesterday, I was struck by the absence of political signs in their development.

Turns out the HOA bans political signs.

I have mixed feelings about that. It keeps everything clean but kinda sterile.

Saw a number of boats headed to a parade in support of a political candidate today. I won’t say which one, lest I offend, but there were no sailboats involved.

I have a 1x on the mountain bike but I don't need high gears unless I go on the road, which is almost never. It has a 11-46 cassette which is heavy.
1x makes room on a mountain bike for complex suspension systems and allows short stays with 29" wheels. Plus, front derailleurs suck in the mud.
This'd be on a new bike. A steel bike, and so 1x would mean also mean no FD clamp.

And to me there's also something about arranging the gearing such that I actually use it. instead of doing what I do now which is live in the bottom 2/3s of my cassette and having useless gears above and below. Again, for a bike that is used on defined terrain.

Also I do have a few memorable, horrible chain drop and failed shift experiences that still haunt me occasionally.

No problem - they just have to log on to NextDoor if they want some ugliness with their neighbors.

A case of excessive packaging:

A main wrapper containing three smaller packages that each five wrapped pieces.

They've been like that for decades. I loved Mambas when I was a kid; I thought they were way better than Starbursts. Haven't had any in forever, though.

There is that. I'm curious about it but I don't know if it would work for me. People ride all over on fixed gear bikes and we used to ride 2x5 set ups. so it might work for a lot of people, a lot of the time.

Got most of the move done today. Sleeping in the new house tonight, I am exhausted. Looking forward to exploring tomorrow morning, I have a basic idea of where I am going to ride. Leaving and coming to the neighborhood is going to be sketchy, but the rest should be good.

Spot on. It is very cool.

Way back when, Mrs. LAJ took it upon herself to go get me a Toro because she was tired of watching me keep the old pos we had alive. I'm thinking 15-18 years ago. It's a wonderful machine, but it's getting to the point that I used hose clamps as lever stops, and has some slight noise on start up, etc. It looked good from a distance, but you get up close and you can see me handiwork. The last time I mowed, there was a new vibration, and I just thought it was time.

That Kobalt killed it. It's a 6ah 80 volt battery, and I feel like I'm picking up my truck battery when I load it in. I had half of a battery left, and that's after nearly an hour of mowing. Battery, charger and mower were basically half price, so I basically bought the battery, and got a lawn mower in the box with it.

They have snow blowers too, but I think I'll wait for the self propelled.

Well right. You, again, with mountains have cause for both higher and lower gearing than I do. To me it's not a lot different from the move from a triple to a double (in theory; triples were already heavily declining when I started) - if increases in cassette speeds can give you enough range to simplify the front, why not do it? I wouldn't (at least now) do it on every bike, or my only bike. Heck, this time last year I didn't have the power needed to make it work anyway; it's only the heel injury and lockdown that gave me enough power to get it done.

Well, the power to get it done acceptably. My theory was to try Ekar, since it should be out in time for the new bike, but if all the cassettes are 9-up that may cancel that. It's just a thought at this point.

I know it sounds silly, but I have a dire case of the hiccups now. It sits in the back of my head that my grandfather once had to go to the ER for them.

Terrible. So sorry you have to live with that. I’ve never been taught anything useful for breaking attacks.
