Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Vol, what’s your job? I’ve always pictured you as some type of Univ Tennessee administrator. Do colleges still have deans?

It's just easier to leave the sweets alone. Like drinking, you start back up again, you're right back or worse than you were, within weeks.

I am looking at a possible hernia surgery in the near future. I saw the surgeon (again) yesterday, and while it's not big/serious, there's apparently no way to predict discomfort. And when it hurts, it feels like someone is squishing one of my testicles. Not great. #FamilyForum

Not that glamorous. I do a few different things but my main job is I do the books at an architectural firm.

Mrs LAJ just had hernia surgery, it was outpatient, and she's back to work after two weeks.

Just knock it out, get it done. You will feel so much better once it's over. My early March surgery date was cancelled due to covid, forcing me to wait until July before I got it done. That was no picnic, it was getting progressively worse, but what a relief when it was done. Two weeks and you can play football if you want, climb mountains, whatever.

Haven't left the house since mid February. Gone to doctor, drive thru pharmacy and mowed lawns. Covid is terrible in Merced, Ca. and now the smoke. Gained at least 10 pounds and lost all fitness. One good thing is that Halloween is cancelled. We always buy $300 worth of full size candy bars, and of course, have to sample them before. No candy this year.

I'm retired but have been thinking of some sort of part time job I could do from home. Maybe become a crop circle designer and sell the plans of the web.

I'd like to at least wait until it was colder (less missed activities), but it may not be worth it.

It's not like I expected in that I see little to no correlation between physical activity and discomfort. I've had bad days where I was just sitting at the desk, then Sunday I rode 50 miles and it didn't bother me at all. Go figure.

Not a good time to gamble. If there's a second covid peak as predicted they may cancel all elective surgeries again.

Exactly my experience. I first felt it last softball season, but was able to play the whole season without discomfort . . . hard, sudden accelerations and stops and everything. No weight training restrictions at the gym, nothing. But sitting around at home during the covid shutdown was torture, the less active you are the more uncomfortable it is and the harder it is to push the protrusion back in.

Correct. Sad.

I had hoped to be semi-retired by now (55) but it's going to take another few years.

When I had my labrum repaired I waited until winter so that I’d miss out on less and it was likely far more miserable than if I’d done it in spring. recovering in the winter/cold sucks imo.

It got cool last night. It went down to approx 48F which I know is not super cold but it was our first chilly day in several months. It's a taste of things to come.
