Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SMFH
The computer counts every cog change as a single shift and there are often times one makes multiple shifts, say, fourth to sixth on a slight downhill, that counts two. Then 500’ later, you shift back to fourth, that’s two more, so you now have four shifts in a tenth of a mile.

Destination ride today - I'm not a fan. Driving to a ride always gives me anxiety about forgetting something stupid (like my shoes or water bottles or whatever), even if I double-check my triple-check.

I think tri geeks have an advantage there; we're used to such packing.

Chilly here too, for Raynaud's, but not as bad as @datlas - 61*. Going to wait a bit and let the sun start warming it up.

Also, fuggin' bee sting.

I was hoping that it would be subject to less agitation than the previous sting on my hip, but it continued to swell overnight and get more itchy. Benadryl doesn't seem to agree with me, makes me feel so lethargic, so I'm going to pick up some other antihistamine en route, but I don't like the idea of throwing new chemicals in to the mix on a day like today.

Yeah, as are those that do a lot of charity/organized rides and whatnot. I do maybe one or two rides per year that don't start at my front door (or my in-laws front door), though, so it never gets to be routine.

Personally, I would think that a lot of shifts indicates a highly experienced rider making efficient use of his gears.
It can be seen both ways, of course. My use of friction downtube shifters, with few gear choices is more the mountain man approach of doing more with less. Because we were tougher in those days kinda thing. I ride 7% hills in 40/30 gearing.

I read, yesterday, that as we slide deeper into climate change this kind of thing will become more frequent. And crime in general

Don't forget your mask. That's what I most often have to return for. We are required to wear them on the bike.

I see. that shift count isn't very useful other than general comparison with other rides. I usually don't skip a cog when shifting unless i encounter a big gradiant change. I bet on a tandem you shift a lot more.

That's counting wrong then. Two shifts. If you aren't changing two or three gears over, why even bother shifting?

Of course it matters. The degree gets you to an interview. That's the point. It's used as shorthand for "this person has a good chance of fitting in."

I once drove an hour to do a pre ride of the Tour of the Battenkill course. When I got there I blew off a valve and had left my bag wrench at home.

Luckily someone had one. Later in the ride I crashed on a muddy descent and broke a rib and also screwed up my knee. I had to ride 25 miles back to the car like that with about 2k of climbing. It sucked

I pack my race duffel and load the car the night before CX races. Especially, if I have to leave the house before sunrise.
