Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the model number for this Shimano SPD pedal? If they are not sold anymore, what model is closest? I'm thinking of getting a second road bike and using the same Sidi shoes / cleats.

I think A520, A600 and new ES600 are the current single sided SPDs. I've used the A520 and A600 and can't really tell a difference. The dark finish on the A600 got beat up pretty quickly.

I use the PD-ES600. They are the Ultegra version of that pedal. I love them. Plenty light and secure. Plus, I can walk when I am off the bike. I am mainly a MTBer though so don't listen to me...

+1 for PD-ES600. Use for my long-distance multi-day rides with S-Works Recon shoes.

They are PD-6500. I have them on almost all my road bikes. They are no longer made.

Not sure why he wants them, but I use them on my road bikes because I like the combination of weight and look as the 600 is even lighter than some Shimano road pedals.
These are road bikes- im not constantly clicking in and out, so its not like I need 2 sides to quickly get locked in a lot. And when I do get a foot down, the pedals make it simple to lock back in based on how they hang.

I guess I would ask why I would want double sided SPD pedals for my road bikes.

If I'm gonna use ugly pedals, that always have a little play in the retention, I might as well get all the benefits of using SPDs.

I actually like the look of these on a non-carbon road bike. They are relatively svelte metal, as opposed to clunky plastic. I do understand that road pedals may provide a more stable platform but this type works well for the casual riding I do. For a carbon bike, may as well go all in with plastic!

They always hang in the same position so there's never any fiddling, and work with walkable shoes for running around inside stores on long rides getting water, etc.

They came with the bike. Back in the 1990s ( early I think ), I wanted a road bike. This is before the internet - I wasn't aware of or used usenet either - overseas in Japan. So my brother, who's deeply into road and mountain bikes helped me spec and fit a complete bike from Excel Sports and they shipped it to my LBS near Yokosuka Japan. Long story short, he picked my handle bar width, frame size, and components (105) (and pedals), and everything else - fitted from afar. Everything turned out to be spot on. I've had my Sidi shoes since then also. He schooled me on clipless pedals and I knew most of the pitfalls beforehand. So I got used to this style and they do me fine over the miles I've done.

Thank you - I didn't realize I had Ultegra on my ride!

I understand why some people like SPD shoes, but have never seen a single-sided SPD pedal that would hang in the right position.

I am not sure what the right position is but, these absolutely hang in the same place every time you go to clip in. They may even be easier to get in to than the two sided SPD pedals.

gios,

i needed pedals for one of my recent bike acquisitions, and at that time, I wasn't able to find my favorite pd-6500 on the used market. I decided to try these new Shimano pedals which are still available:

https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/produ...0/PD-A600.html

I like these because they have a larger platform than the pd-6500, and are even easier to swing into position for cleat entry
