Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

This Single Speed Thing.... How Did I Ever Live Without It?

I recently converted an older Diamondback Traverse (circa '93) to SS on the cheap. Got the bike free, and spent about $20.00 to get it to SS configuration. In short, I LOVE IT!
So much, in fact, I think I am going to convert my '95 Gary Fisher Mamba to SS.
I really like the simplicity and quiet ride I get rolling without gears.
Cool thing is, I will end up with a lighter, better bike with the Mamba.
That's it... I'm hooked.

Those two are pretty similar bikes, so you may want to think about keeping one single speed and the other gear. Its always good to have more diversity in the stable.

Good to hear it. I think SS bikes are almost more awesome off road than on. No annoying chain slap, no gears to get all gummed up with mud and crap. Drivetrain cleanings are much easier too.

You guys are smart. I also sold my geared mountain bike and bought a Vassago Jabberwocky after realizing 1 gear is superior.

I'm putting a 5-speed freewheel on my SS conversion and giving it to a friend in exchange for an oddball aluminum coaster brake bike. It's going to get the big tire treatment so I can ride it on the dirt here.
