Pinarello or Chinarello?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pinarello or Chinarello?

Hello guys.

There is a local guy selling 2 Pinarello F10s: a used one w/ Dura ace 9000 groupset, another brand new in box frame.

There are different factors leading me to doubt they are genuine frames: why selling 2, why such an old groupset on a 2018 frame, the way he answers questions, etc.

Before meeting the guy (3 hours ride) and spending time on validating the serial number, do you see anything that would indicate they are Chinarellos?

Thanks!

What does the age of the groupset matter? How does the older set make it more or less likely to be fake?

The picture with the sticker on it, does it say "MADE IN CHINA"?

Pinarello is one of, if not the biggest fake out there, so no matter what you do, you may never know.

This is what an actual EC90 stem looks like:
https://www.eastoncycling.com/produc...s/ec90-sl-stem

This is what an actual EC90 bar looks like:
https://www.eastoncycling.com/produc...s/ec90-slx-bar

TL;DR, the graphics are completely wrong and in fact..look exactly like AliExpress counterfeits. So, if the stem/bar are fake--why wouldn't the frames.

You stated "spending time on validating serial numbers". Did you validate the serial numbers? If they were valid why would you still question its authenticity? If they were not, then you have your answer? What is missing here?

The one thing I see here is the headset top cap, (not the cap that sits on top of the stem) the one that seals the headset into the headtube. Pinarellos use their own cap with their name on it.

Groupsets are not an indication of genuine or counterfeit. Authorized dealers sell frames with fork, headset and seatpost, so you can put any groupset on it that you want.

Is the bottom bracket Italian? It should say "Think Asymmetric" on it twice and Pinarello twice.
The red bike says "Torayca 1100 space carbon". That paint scheme should only say "Dogma F10 Pinarello" in that area.

What matters is if you bought a Chinarello at a Pinararello price or a Chinarello at a Chinarello price.

Visit a Pinarello dealer before looking at the bike.

Definitely Chinarello.

The FD bolt is never chrome. The "made in" sticker is not real. Headset is not original.

From the Pinarello Website

If it doesnt have the paperwork its not real.

The counterfeiters do not offer an OFFICIAL PINARELLO WARRANTY,

Atleast with a china COLNAGO like the C-rs model you are getting a cheaper bike that is from Colnago, with the Chinarello you take all the risk, ie "The counterfeiters do not offer an OFFICIAL PINARELLO WARRANTY, "

2018 you say?

If they are real he should be able to supply receipts for something he bought only last year. If he can't show any receipts or a bank statement showing payment to the bike shop then I'd walk away.

Doesn't the FD bolt come with the FD? How does a removable part allow you to determine if a frame is legit or not? I'm not saying they are not fake, but that seems like a weak argument!

Clearly fake. The pinarello graphic on that color scheme is supposed to be plain white.

Here is a real 166 Red Magma F10.

Just a red flag. If they bought the frame and built it up thats one thing but if they bought it as a complete bike or are trying to sell it as a complete bike its a red flag.

Yeah, the "AliExpress Special" stem and handlebars are a dead giveaway that this hasn't been bought as a complete bike.

I mean really, if you even have a semblance of doubt that leads you to need to ask, would you ever truly believe it was actually real even if it was?

Always buy from a legit authorized dealer, then there is no question about what you are buying.

Economics 101 .. if you are trying to make a product that requires a lot of hand labor to assemble and finish,

you go to a place where the cost of that labor is Lowest.. and you train them..

[would not be surprised if the Italian marque , has a Taiwan based factory
making the carbon fiber frames and forks.. it's a practise commonly pursued.

your 'local guy' have any sales receipts showing 'provenance', from buying through a a Pinarello dealer?

I have bought Pinarellos at a Chinarello price from an authorized dealer complete with warranty, twice. Dogma 60.1 and 65.1, both under $1K.
