Well, after 4 years of waiting, saving, lusting, hoping, and begging, plus today's sale of my other baby (heavily modified Harley), I've been given the green light to order a custom steel Speedvagen. https://www.speedvagen.com/

This has been in the works for a long time, and while I plan to fly to Portland for a proper fitting I'll be purchasing the frame only and porting most of my current parts to the new bike. Exception (other than headset and BB), will be the handlebar and stem, I'm thinking of getting the integrated Ritchey or Pro painted to match, along with DI2 integration, and carbon seatpost head. I'm not completely sure of paint yet (Overt is out), but crossed between the Horizon paint scheme (Slate/Citron), or the Holla Text Army.

Long way to go since I just placed the deposit today, but incredibly excited to build my dream bike!

I believe the build time is around 8-12 weeks, I imagine that I'll be talking to them on Monday to make arrangements for fitting session, then I'll have to fly in, and such.

You should do a multi-day bike trip to your fitting. That would really show the builders your commitment.

That's what I'm thinking! Of course, winter riding here is the best time. Summer's we start at 6am and still face temps in the mid 80's reaching 100+ by the time the ride is done!

Ha, true enough! I think they only make a couple hundred bikes per year, so I think I'll be the one admiring their commitment. Part of the fitting includes a tour of the shop and fabrication area which I've never seen before so I think that will be cool. Ultimately though part of the decision to travel there will be based on ticket pricing.

Congrats, I know how it feels - sort of, just bought a new bike myself but it's just from REI - a few more decades before I splurge on my 'dream' bike (though the one I bought, except for titanium, ticks most of my want boxes for today)

Agreed. Although most stock bikes have done relatively well for me they did require a lot of fitting and changes. Still, I’m looking forward to finding out how much of a difference a custom build will feel. I’ve only seen one Speedvagen in the flesh and it wasn’t my size, but I’ve never heard someone as reserved as the owner gush so much about the ride.

Since I’m still not completely set on paint scheme, I’m curious what you folks think of either of these two...

I like the bottom paint scheme better, the top one has too much going on for my tastes.

Just a question out of curiosity.. when you get a custom bike with custom paint, is it an option to not have the brandname and/or model included in the scheme?

I like the base color on the bike in the upper photo but agree with @duane041 that there's too much going on for me. How about the colors from the upper in the pattern on the lower?

They don’t have model names and not sure if they would build without brand name BUT if you go to their website they have a paint scheme called “Ghost” which has the Speedvagen name painted in relief with the same paint color as the frame so incredibly subtle

They do have a couple of “Horizon” schemes that feature the army green.

Given that it's custom, I'd bet that you can have any colors you want in that scheme. The guy with the spray gun? I bet he doesn't much care what colors he's spraying...

Beautiful bikes! I was looking at Speedvagen and Buam as my next bike but ended up ordering a Bianchi Oltre XR4 instead. My next bike will be one of the aformentioned or the Colnago C60. You can never have enough bikes!

I like the colors in the top photo better, but I do agree there's quite a bit going on there. A little simpler, but in the same colors, would be awesome.

So far I think the horizon is my pick. There are other colors but the photo attached was my favorite. I will be asking about any other choices.

Timothy, at this point my plan is to port my current components and wheels, dura ace 9070, and my November Rail carbon wheels. I’ll alternate as needed with my other wheels tubeless also built by November. LOL, no Millenstein's for me, I'm a November advocate. I will be replacing my bars with painted to match Pro integrated bar/stem. If I have any money at the end I may look to the new Dura Ace 9150, but only so that the old bike is easier to sell.
