Remember when we were kids? You'd just hop on your bike and go?
I want to get back to that.
Now, I have to change into special clothes.
Put on special shoes.
Put on my headband.
Put on my helmet.
Put on gloves.
Fill my water bottle(s)
Take something to eat, if going more than about 25 miles (I bonk easy)
Check and possibly air my tires.
Make sure i have all my crap (Tracfone; $5 bill; hanky/sweat rag; dog biscuits; keys....)
Make sure my bag-O-tools is on the bike I'll be riding.
Go for the ride.
Upon returning:
Have a snack.
Change clothes & shoes,
Wash cycling clothes.
Relax a bit in front of the 'puter.
And then I wonder why I don't have time to ride? I could easily more than double my riding time if it weren't for all the minutiae!
When I was a kid, I'd just grab my 10-speed BSO, and go ride 25 miles. Come home, and do something else. No preparation; no wind-down; no wasted time. I had more fun and rode more.
Methinks we need to stop playing the adult. If we're gonna play with children's toys...lets do it right!

It's an all day event. I'm not going to drive an hour, pound out 14 miles in an hour, then drive home an hour. Sorry I can't ride 50 miles to a 40 mile ride then ride 50 miles home like you professionals do

I hear you
But like most things in life, it is partly what you make it though.
Either way, enjoy!

When I go on a pleasure ride I just bring a water bottle or two, a pannier just in case I want to buy something along the way and that's pretty much it. The U-lock is bracket-mounted to the frame so I never forget that. I almost never forget my helmet because I'm new to cycling and am not yet comfortable riding without wearing one.
The commute ride is a bit more of a production, but I try to prepare by packing a pannier with work clothes and other stuff the night before, so in the morning all I have to do is put the pannier onto the rack. There are other commuters who prefer a more minimalist style - eg. commuting by car/train with work clothes and leaving them at the office, then on the bike commute days, riding with minimal gear (helmet, lock, lights - no rack, no pannier, not even a backpack) and changing into the clothes already at the office.

I keep everything inside my helmet except bottles, shoes, and garmin so I never need to hunt stuff down. Garmin is next to my keys or computer so yes I could forget it but that's not a deal-breaker. I have forgotten a bottle but I can live without. Shoes are at the door and in Hawaii we always take our shoes off at the door, so you have to stop there to put on shoes regardless, it's pretty hard to forget grabbing your cycling shoes. I always wear what I'm riding in when I leave the house. Might take a t-shirt to wear on the way home. It's pretty much on auto-pilot and doesn't really make a difference if I ride from home or throw it in the car.
