Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend (or Week's) Rides -- July 28/29

Last weekend of July! Hopefully the Northern Hemisphere's here are enjoying beautiful summer weather and will be getting out for some good long rides.

Today is a lovely day in this part of the southern hemisphere, with highs of 14C ... maybe winter is finally coming to an end!

Whatever the weather, tell us all about your cycling and other sports this weekend, week, month, etc.

Miserable humidity here. Last week the humidity was generally over 90%. At ride's end today I could barely see from the sweat dripping into my eyes.

Well, this ride was on the 26th, but maybe it still counts? 153 miles, ~10,000', temperatures down to 48° near the start, getting up to 90°-100° on the last pass. Full sun all the way, beautiful day. I was bib #10, meaning only 9 riders out of 800 were older than I. I finished 265th. I'm slow, but don't stop much. This photo was taken near the top of one of the climbs. The photographer said to ride straight at him, smiling, out of the saddle, having fun, then at the last instant I realized he wasn't going to move, hence the odd expression. Missed him by inches.

Equipment: '99 Trek 5200 9-speed triple, sanded down to the carbon; Pactimo climbers jersey, 70 oz. Camelbak refilled 3 times, Kinlin XC279 rims, CX-Ray spokes, 23mm Conti 4K IIs tires, Syntace aerobars.

Saturday -- not much exercise. We were resting up to go to the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra in the evening. Our first real "outing" since the accident.

Sunday -- 900 metre walk when the rain stopped.

Then, I did ...

Distance -- 19.65km
Elevation -- 40m
Moving Time: 43:00
Elapsed Time: 50:40

........................ Avg ............. Max
Speed ............. 27.4km/h ....... 41.4km/h
Heart Rate ...... 145bpm ......... 172bpm
Cadence ......... 83 ................. 121
Power ............ 101W ............ 239W

And Rowan did ...

Distance: 9.57km
Elevation: 33m
Moving Time: 21:11
Elapsed Time: 21:11

................. Avg .............. Max
Speed ..... 27.1km/h ........ 42.5km/h
Cadence .. 65 .................. 73
Power ..... 113W ............. 157W

As with all flat routes on Zwift (we did the London Flat Route), I think our speeds and distances are a bit overblown.

Well, I did make it out both days. Still couldn't breathe yesterday but today the lungs felt a lot better, finally.

Saturday. 30 miles on the Opus III with an average of 17.5 mph. Took it a bit easy since I was still having health issues.

My new kit bag. Holds a large amount of stuff!

Old Chapel

One more pic from along the way

Sunday - Today I took out the Basso Gap. I put some new wheels on it yesterday. I had bought them for a different bike but the reds didn't match. The wheels made the bike feel faster and did not take away from it's amazingly smooth ride. 29 miles at an average of 18.4 mph. Lungs felt better. I did get a rare flat at mile 23 so I didn't take the little mile detour on the way home that would have put me over 30 miles like I did on Saturday.

The paint on this is so gorgeous.

The big stop in the middle is my first tubeless flat, which failed to seal and ends my tubeless experiment. Back to latex tubes, though I'll try with the Vittoria Corsa G+. Even that's an experiment though; we'll be picking up another half-dozen GP4KSs after Boulder, because we have a very high level of trust in that tire.

Bummer on the flat. I caught one today too and ironically it was probably my only tube with sealant in it. Did absolutely nothing too other than make a mess, LOL! Maybe it was just a the day for flats today?

Ah, that sucks! Yes, maybe. I'm a little sour that my wife's old boss was riding with us and talking about tubeless issues and flats, and then I get my first flat all year and have tubeless issues. Generally not a superstition guy, but sometimes it's better to not tempt fate.

Still, better today than next weekend while racing.

This weekend was a couple more "getting back into the swing of things" rides - not for me, but for my riding mates.

Yesterday it was just two of us. We didn't get as far as we figured we might, but it was a decent ride anyhow. He called it the "seat adjustment ride." He had to stop at one point because he was getting so aggravated/pained by his saddle - a slight downward adjustment of the nose did the trick for the last few miles. Then, on my bike I hadn't marked the seat post before adjusting it for my friend to test ride last weekend, and I kept thinking it was too high or too low. Got it pretty close, but it was still off, only I wasn't sure which way. Stopped by the bike shop once I got home, and got re-fit while we watched the end of the time trial. 37 miles, 1,680'

Today was kind of weird. Met up for a regular group ride, one which a lot of different people attend from time to time, but not necessarily folks I ride with often otherwise. The weirdest thing was being greeted by name by people I didn't recognize at all. Sort of Twilight Zone. Once we got rolling, though, I kinda started to recognize them. The first few miles were a route that I never take except with that group, and there's a climb on it that I rather like, so it was fun, but after a while, a couple of guys I ride with more often had to cut out, and after a while I was eager to ride with a different group. Fortunately, that's when another guy who's just back on the bike after about six months joined. We did a few miles with the group, but he wasn't up for the "training" repeats on Alpine that the leader had advertised, but he was up for a few more miles of general purpose riding, which went pretty well. There were parts where we got along at a pretty good clip, and I pretty much did all the work, but I was happy to. 57 miles, 3,290'

Took one of my favorites, a jaunt up the NH coast. 76 miles round trip from my home. A beautiful day for it, as well.

Yeah, I moved my long ride to today (Sunday) for just that reason. As you said, the humidity this past week was through the roof.

Beautiful weather here in western WI! I think it's the usual July cooldown - I'm sure we'll get some more awful heat and humidity again soon.

Saturday: Weekend road ride - 45.2 miles, 1,857'. One flat on the ride, and a bit of a scare when the "roadkill" two of us pointed out started to move!
Saturday, part 2: My house was invaded by teenagers. So, it was off with the bike trailer to buy a ton of cheap pizzas...9.2 miles, 84'.

Sunday: Gravel ride (33.3 miles, 2272'), plus ride to/from (20.9 miles, 367'). Despite being pretty beat up, I PR'd on all the climbs. And...that puts me over 1,000 miles for the month!

Went out with my GF and got this in yesterday. About 31 mi. @ 14.8 mph. All the climbing is at the end and then headwinds on the run home. But, fun nonetheless.

Should mention that on Saturday my club had it's annual ride event. There are options for a Century, 67 miler and a 50 mile ride. All supported. We declined to ride because of the weather and distances. I'm not really interested in riding much more than 40 or so miles. As a result my time on the bike is much more fun and I'm riding faster and smoother. In any event, it was hot and humid. We did 17.5 miles starting around 9 AM. When we got back after 1:08 of pedaling I was drenched with sweat. Could barely see because of sweat in my eyes and on my sunglasses. On the club ride, 7 of my friends went off in a group for the 67 mile ride. These are solid riders who ride lots of miles every year. Of the 7 only 2 could finish the ride.

Still hot and muggy this weekend. At least the wind was low. Both Saturday and Sunday did the S. Tampa Picnic Is to Davis Is ride for 40 miles each day. Threw in a few side streets to make it more interesting. Strange thing on Saturday. Another cyclist who was running lights and riding the wrong way scolded me of NOT running red lights. I told him I don't run lights or ride against traffic because I don't want to be a nuisance to others. People are weird.

Got out for the first group ride in a while. 57 miles from Chicago to Fort Sheridan and back (15 was from house to meetup point and back).

Yeesh those guys are fast lol. 27-28mph for some of the longer straight stretches north of the city. Survived, didn't get dropped, and even held my own and finished near the front in the few sprints. I'm absolutely spent from it though lol. Went to bed at 9pm last night, and still pretty fatigued today. Bike fit a couple weeks ago has been a revelation though. No nagging pains, knots, feelings of imminent failure in the knees, etc. Just general tiredness. Kind of a wonderful feeling after years of wondering if my knees will survive to see another major ride lol

Rode a few miles to watch the crit race Saturday eve,

& then got out Sunday eve up & around the mountain 31, 3,400'.

Started at 7:30, caught a nice sunset & the roads were empty on the later town sections.

Should have done a long ride to prep for event in two weeks, but oh well.

This year I decided to ride shorter rides, as in less than 40 miles, in favor of rides where I pick my spots and ride hard. I think of those segments as training and tests of where I am in fitness. Strangely, I have gotten quite a few PBs. At age 72 that is not what I was expecting. In addition to being rewarded with PBs I find that I'm much smoother and having more fun.
