This week marks 1 year of bicycle commuting for me.

I have only been riding, as an adult, for about a month longer than that. It was really easy to get hooked on riding to work. It's just so easy. There are many benefits and, it's still fun to boot. Can't help but look forward to each ride.

Thanks to the BF members who have shared experiences and advice. It has helped make the first year easier, more enjoyable, and safe.

Congrats on your 1 year!
I am on 9 months with my new 7.6fx and couldn't be happier! Had a second chain installed for switch cleaning and the different chain really smoothed shifting up.
Have to agree, the BF forums are a wealth of info. I had no idea there was so much to learn about cycling. The fun part is that the learning never stops!
There is a bike race next weekend in Edwardsville, IL that I will try to attend. Those riders are way out of my league tho!

I have to say that it is pretty awesome that you jumped straight into cycle commuting after only riding a month! What's been your biggest challenge? Maintenance issues? Dealing with traffic? Or something else?

Well, I had some degree of motivation to start riding to work.
The wife and I had been riding to a farmers market each weekend to get fresh veggies. The route went right past my work. It's only about 3.2 miles, and after a couple of trips, I said, "I should try riding to work". Couple of weeks later, my old truck blew up! So, as they say, the rest is history. Perhaps the best thing (besides the dear wife) that ever happend to me.
Now I often add miles in the evening on a new section of the locale MUP and once they connect it with the other end, I may use it morning and evening.
Getting the right fit on my bike has been difficult. The combination of seat ht, position, bars, combined with a problematic knee was a booger to work out. I'm still amazed at the difference really small changes can make. Maintenance has not been a big deal. My route is mostly residential streets, with a few blocks of a divided (grassy median) more used downtown feeder. It's two lanes wide, but there is some parking allow on it. I'm very fortunate not having to use the 4-lane feeders in town.

Congrats! Keep it up. Before you know it, 7 years will have passed you by. That's how long I have been doing it and I plan to keep it up until I retire.

You can expect to notice even more benefits from the lifestyle as the first 9 years fly by (I wouldn't know about the years after that).
