Why are average speed readings so different on group rides?

I'm jumping into this thread late, but the answers to the question seem pretty obvious. Group rides are not a bunch of robots riding in unison. Even if everybody starts and finishes the official ride at the same places and times, there are all these other variables: People will be riding to the ride or not, starting and stopping their head units at different times, stopping and starting at traffic lights at the different times, actually stopping at stop signs or not, pulling in to and leaving the rest stop(s) with different delays, slow pedaling versus outright stopping when there's a holdup in back (mechanical, etc.), have different autopause settings, and on and on.

The group I rode with this summer solved our disparity problems with our cyclocomputers. We determined that the guy with the highest average speed must be correct and the rest of us need to work on our systems. Amazingly, no one complained.
