Gas prices going up and who cares!!

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/ene...ession-n867531

So yet again the prices will be going up sky high. I’m sure the cycling community don’t care all that much.
Because we can ride till the pedal fall off.

Higher fuel prices drives up the cost of food and almost all consumer products.

I believe there is also a correlation between drivers enraged by gas cost and how they react to us "free " riders too.

Aww. That's like €0.59 per liter. You're a lucky man. Yesterday I paid €1.59 per liter.

Cool. Every summer, I play a game: I try to run my 15 gallon tank low enough that I can spend 60 bucks to fill it up.

You seen how they drive and the cost of delivery lately?

I got my doors blown off years ago by a girl in a Subaru Justy with a pizza sign.

The Energy Information Administration had originally forecast that drivers in the United States would pay an average of $2.74 per gallon this summer for regular gasoline — but we’re already there.
€1,719/L or $7,94 per gallon. *shrug*

Still bikes and public transport for me. Faster and cheaper too.

I don't think anything with the word 'diet' in it is good for anything, but I think we're wandering off-topic now.

Maybe, but it seemed to me that the roads became less congested the last time gas prices spiked. Partly that people were driving less and partly that they were leaving the Expedition in the garage and driving the Focus instead.

Verily. I hail skyrocketing gas prices as the spur towards improved cars and trucks with ever-increasing MPG. And electrics, of course. I'm also one of those bomb-throwing communists that would gladly pay, say, an extra $0.50 a gallon if it went to a big fund for infrastructure projects like improved roads, light rail, bike paths... I imagine that's the kind of math that makes NonFixie pay through the nose for gas; but also enjoy the kind of vastly superior infrastructure his country gets.

It wouldn't effect my pocketbook too much, personally. I drive so little it doesn't even pay to replace my old beater gas hogs (1993 Subie Wagon - 22mpg and a 1993 Accord - 26 mpg) with something more efficient. Both of these cars will probably still be plugging away long after I'm gone

Yeah, except that an extra 50 cents a gallon wouldnt do any of those things you're describing the way things are done these days. An extra $5 a gallon would be more realistic.

Out here in SoCal our Gov. Moon Beam tacked on a infrastructure tax to gasoline not to mention a increase on car registration , well he calls it a transportation tax . He says it will fix our roads . Gullible morons voted for it . Guess what the money will be used for his crazy train .

Our in Michigan are out of control with pot holes. They want to increase our car registration too. Gas are already on the rise here.

Last time gas flirted with $5 a gallon, about a decade ago, it sparked the resurgence of the 27" tire as LBS all over the country sold out of their stock because folks were blowing the dust off their old bike boom 10 speeds to give bike commuting a try rather than spend a fortune at the pump. The bike tire industry noticed and suddenly everybody, not just Cheng Shin and Panaracer had an offering. Wonder what will happen this time around???

At the time my bike commute route include a bridge that would raise for boat traffic, it went from one or two of us waiting when the bridge was up to looking like a charity ride was about to kick off...good times.

US D.O.E. says 144 billion gallons of gas were sold in the US last year. And that's not counting diesel, presumably. $72 billion/year buys us nothing, is what you’re telling me?

Heh. Every little bit helps. Gotta start somewhere. How do you propose we fund those kinds of projects? Surely we cannot ask the wealthy to pay more taxes? Gas taxes (and any sales taxes, for that matter) hurt the little guy more than the rich guys, but whattaya gonna do?

My point being, infrastructure is worth having. If you agree with me on that, we should agree it has to be funded one way or another. We can do it the way we used to do it back in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, or we can try to squeeze more money out of the middle class and poor (higher gas taxes). We have choices, theoretically. One choice would be to let our infrastructure continue to collapse.

Back on topic: rising gas prices don’t mean much to me. I’ve been buying gas for over 40 years; prices go up and down a lot. It’s a commodity. The market is pretty efficient there. And I have built in prejudices that buffer me from serious harm. Like living within 5 miles of work, and riding bikes when I can.

An extra $0.50/gal tax would roughly double the combined state&fed gasoline tax in the US. So I'd expect that to have a very sizable effect on transportation funding in this country.
