Eddy Merckx's own Colnago Molteni Team bike from 1971 on sale

This news came from Germany. I'm not sure how this rarity ended up at the Steel Vintage Bike shop, but you can check it out here: https://steel-vintage.com/eddy-merck...eid=7954dde0e6
They have lots of pictures, but not price. Someone has to make an offer.

Maybe it is obvious it is a team bike to others based on frame details but I would hope they have some documentation to prove it. Otherwise they have an orange merckx with a signature on the top tube.

It is my size but I am too poor for this sort of thing.

Could be a team bike, but Eddy's? Better have paperwork

I love that fork crown!

Didn't know Merckx rode so big a frame.
I recall as a kid mechanics plugging the steerer like that - "for safety" they said.

...there was once a thread here on someone advertising, for sale, Confente's own bike, that he supposedly made while working for Masi California. I think it was priced at $10,000, and was put together with "authentic Campagnolo vintage grease" IIRC. It had an equal amount of provenance and documentation, which was none. If you are gonna dream, dream big, sez I.

Beautiful and definitely a change from the norm, but the provenance doesn't mean a hill of beans without paperwork - even if it is the real thing.

People selling the real thing aren't afraid to lead with paperwork. Charlatans are.

I saw a thread of this bike on Facebook and it had a picture of Eddy signing the top tube by the seat lug. I think he was confirming it's history.

...Merckx signing bicycles was not unusual. There was a guy on the local CL selling one here a couple of years back, that got the signature when Merckx visited his brother's bike shop. It never sold at the imagined premium, but the local CL is not exactly the proper venue for that sort of thing. It was up for a while, ad disappeared, then ad reappeared a year later. I guess it might come up again next year.

Actually the bike was "authentic" BUT, it had been repainted twice, modified then returned to reasonably correct, repainted almost correct.
Should have had a yellow head tube, no yellow seat tube panel, no signature on the top tube. I saw the bike at the Griffith Park Grand Prix, Mario riding it.
Kirkbride took the torch to it initially, at the time modification of an old frame was just a way to keep an old frame up to date.
There is an image of Brian Baylis reviewing in at one of the Velo Rendezvous events- it was Red and white in its second iteration.

The initial ask was 12k, then 10k, sold for an undisclosed amount.

Ferrari's get resale Red.
Confente's get resale white and yellow.

My laugh and tribute was Colnago signing Brian Baylis' tribute replica Colnago.
Passed his judgement.

There were TWO bikes Eddy used in this race. The Exchange is on video
So, which one is this one crossing the line?

Doubtful the German guys know or will admit.
It is so very difficult to track possession over decades.

Not unprecedented, forward thinking as he laid the groundwork for licensing and later setting up his own shop.
I'm sure not a small ask as part of the contract negotiations but he was the dominant rider for a long while.

The “Make Offer” feature is irritating. Name a price, or skip the beat! Through eBay and other platforms I always report and remove bikes with unlisted prices. Get to selling, or save it for riding... but don’t chop around about $$!

Doesn't seem to be enough drillium for one of Merckx's bikes in this era.
