Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do I need to cut weight?

Hey guys, I am 16 years old and I am currently 194lb and 6 feet tall, I am a very strong rider and i prospect most of this weight is coming from my legs (muscle) but I do feel that I have a decent amount of excess weight on my body, on my stomach, arms and other various parts. I want to drop 20-30 pounds, I exercise 5 times a week but are there some tips you guys can give me? As I really want to become faster and more efficient at this sport. Thanks in advance.

Eat right. Less calories in vs calories burned = less weight. Cut out fast food if you eat it, (or at least be smart about it. McD's oatmeal instead of egg sandwich, jack in the crack has a good chicken fajita pita, subway can be good but no mayo and stick to turkey, Etc.) Eat smaller portions. No sugars and especially no soda, even if it is diet. Skinless chicken, turkey, fish, long rice, veggies, fruit, oatmeal, and on and on. You will loose weight if you stick to it.

Good luck.

Get a calorie tracking program (fitday, daily plate, numerous iPhone apps) and carefully monitor your calorie intake and expenditure. Maintain a 500 Cal/Day deficit and you should lose 1 lb/week. Probably not a good idea to attempt to lose more than 2 lbs/day.

Calorie management is the key to loosing weight. It isn't so much what you eat, its the total amount of calories you are consuming on a daily basis. Cut calories = Cut weight.

Not saying you need to try this, but it will explain my point...

I wouldn't change your exercise regimen as it sounds like you exercise enough. Like others said watch your diet. I lost 100 pounds starting the summer i graduated from high school until my second year of college. Lots of exercise and a good diet led to my weight loss. I still keep a healthy diet, i'll occasionally have a slice of cheesecake for dessert or a can of coke with my dinner but for the most part i eat well. Cut out all fast food from your diet, that's the root of all evil.

@ 16 years old, you shouldn't really concern yourself with losing weight too much. As long as you are not obese or otherwise overweight (from an overall health perspective, not a cycling one..... because we're all "too fat for this sport" anyway) and you eat healthy & stay active, your body will more or less take care of itself... within reason. 6' and 200 lb. with a good amount of muscle mass is not a bad place to be.

Tons of resources everywhere, so this is just a regurgitation of what's commonly accepted as keys to losing weight. My 2 cents in addition to the above is to cut down both sugar AND salt content; medical conditions being normal, don't intentionally add more sugar or salt into your diet as there's enough of it in the foods you already eat, such as breads and pasta, and meats.

Just cut ALL fast food and soda. Also like everyone else said: monitor calorie intake. Burn more calories than you consume.

Yeah well contador is slightly shorter than you but weighs about 130 lbs so i would say you have some weight to lose, it's all about diet. Simply cutting sodas will be hugely beneficial.

I like to think of it as being "pleasingly plump" rather than fat.

OP, do you have a family Dr.? In all seriousness, no one here is qualified to advise an adolescent on matters of weight loss over the internet (not even the few honest to goodness Dr.'s that frequent Bike Forums) without personally knowing you and all of your health factors.

yes you could lose some weight but you are not fat. just eat right and keep riding a lot and you will lose weight as well as become a stronger faster rider. you are still young so this should be easier to do for you than others and learning good habits now will really help you down the road. good luck and keep at it.

Oh, and try not to be so sensitive. "You're all too fat for this sport" is a favorite meme of the BF road forum. I certainly am.

"You're all to pleasingly plump for this sport" just doesn't sound right.

You are 16... don't cut anything. You're still growing. Unless you want to "cut" out pizza burgers and tacos. If you can learn good eating habits at 16 your a step ahead of your buddies who will gain their freshman 15 in a couple years.

I almost take the opposite side: If you are 194 pounds at 16, when you're metabolism is at it's peak, you are going to be a 400 pound tub'o'lard when you are 30. Ok, maybe not that bad. However, it is quite true that males are burning more calories at rest while 14-18 than at any other point in their life. If you want to be a linebacker, you are on the right track. If you want to be a "healthy" and efficient cyclist though - you've got your work cut out for you. Good luck with it.

6lbs and you have to go to the clysdale forum!

I agree with some of the posts above; eat lean meat, vegi's and fruit. Ride lots and drink (water) lots.
I'm using Lose it on the iphone and it's good.
