Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Filing off lawyer tabs

Does anyone file off the lawyer tabs, lips, bumps, or whatever you call those irritating things on the front fork? It gets old having to unscrew the qr skewer to get the wheel off.

I leave mine on just to keep it a little safer (if the qr comes loose) when I have it mounted in my truck.

i know a few that do, and i have been encouraged to do so, but i have never found the time. seems like a good idea except if you don't tighten in 100%, then it rains and you go over a bump or something.

I left mine on, never know if and when the skewer comes loose on your roof rack. Whats a few extra 3 seconds to twist it off?

I file them. It makes life a little easier. I was surprised that it only took a minute to file the tabs off, so it's not hard to find the time. The fork on my custom steel bike came sans tabs. Since I'm the only one that touches my bike I feel more comfortable not having the added insurance of the tabs.

I finally filed mine off about a month ago because I've been driving to more of my rides (more removing/installing wheels). Very easy.

It's one of those small things that's annoying when you are in a hurry, but not that big of a deal. It's just nice not having to re-adjust the tension just right every time.

My bike didn't come with a dork disk.

I leave the lawyer lips on, though. I feel a lot better when the bike's on the roof of the car in a fork-mount rack with the lawyer lips on.

My road bike didn't come with them, so I didn't have to file them off. On my mountain bike I left them because it has disc brakes. I also never bothered to file them off of my tandem. Just isn't worth it.

My custom steel frame/fork, which I've had since 1985, does not have them.

I got a Ritchey WCS carbon fork for my new Ti frame and it has those stupid lawyer lips. Very annoying. But I am not completely comfortable or confident enough to file them off.

I don't. I don't think it is that big of a deal to unscrew the skewer a few turns to get the wheel off.

Left them on all my bikes, I don't remove the wheel very often and it's not a big deal. It's also cheep insurance, they were put on because people have had serious accidents, not just because of some lawsuit. Would you remove them if they were called retain your teeth tabs?

Because I do group rides that are not near my house. I suppose I could ride to the ride, ride the ride, ride home from the ride... but my legs are not that strong

Filed mine. Only takes a minute even with a hand tool. Then smooth it over with a piece of emory cloth and it looks like it came from the factory that way.

They were put on after an idiot sued a bike company and shop for not forcing him to properly install his front wheel and won.

Neither of my Herons came with the lawyer tabs. Id they did I would remove them.
As for the spoke protectors, they stay. Dump the chain over the large cog and you have cut a few spokes requiring the replacement of the heads in spokes.
