Riding while sick

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding while sick

I'm sick and it finally warmed up here in Florida. After my 7 mile ride to class this morning, I almost chucked twice.

I have a TT and practice race this weekend and really want to be ready for them.

My questions are: Should I ride today, even though I feel sick? Are there any real dangers of riding while sick?

Rest, sleep. You will gain nothing by riding.

Don't ride, you're sick. You're feeling sick because of a reason, your body needs the rest... If you ride anyway, you may risk not being able to ride the TT at all this weekend.

The conventional wisdom is that if your symptoms are all "above the neck", as in runny nose-headcold kind of stuff, then it's okay to train. It sounds like you have the flu, if you had nausea like that. HIGHLY inadvisable to do anything other than rest.

Figure you'll be better by resting rather than riding and wearing yourself down even more. Tons of rest, heat, and do a little spin day before if you insist on racing.

With being sick figure you have 2 weeks to return to your normal level of fitness, at least that's what I read somewhere and it seems to be reasonably accurate from my own experiences.

Hope you feel better soon,
cdr

I wouldn't go very far out on the road, but a quick spin on the trainer helps me blow out most germs - upper and lower. If I've got chest congestion I stay off the bike, everything else I at least consider a ride. If I've got a digestive issue I find a short moderate effort on the trainer helps move things along and aids in recovery. That's just me though.

If you've got the stomach bug, drink tons and live mostly off a soup diet. With any luck, it will pass before your TT. I'll bet you won't tear up the road, but at least you'll be able to get out there and have fun.

Chuck the weekend plans - pun intended - and rest. There is no reason to aggravate already strained system or share pathogens - viruses are still being shed after symptoms improve. Take a look at weather forecast, fwiw.

Get well

I ride when I'm sick until I get to a certain point (and I know what that point is). Then I shut it down. Had a cold that started a week ago Monday. Rode Mon-Wed. By Thursday I was too sick to ride. Didn't ride Thurs/Fri/Sat, got back on the bike Sunday, maybe a day too soon, but I survived, and I've ridden every day since then. The cold has to run its course, unless you have some complication like bronchitis or a fever, I'm convinced if anything the riding helps you get healthy, even in cold temps (it was 20-30º here most of the time I rode with the cold). But a bad cold, even without complications, will take two weeks from first onset of symptoms to when you're 100%. I'm about 90%+, Monday is two weeks since I felt it starting. I should be 100% by Monday.

I agree with patentcad 100%. Before I rode, I felt like crap. The day after the ride, I felt like I was never sick to begin with.

I go for the above the neck rule also. no matter how bad my cough or cold is, i'll still be out there pedaling.

I agree. Riding while sick is never a good idea. Any time I have, it seems to extend the length of my illness. Take it easy!
