Perhaps fenders are cool!

OK, I'll be the first to admit I've always thought fenders on bikes looked kind of "uncool". Well, arriving at work today with the stripe up my back made me thing that maybe fenders are cool after all! Or, maybe I'm just to old to worry about being cool now, but I think I'm gonna get some fenders for the foul weather bike!

oh fenders can be cool... I have an old 84 Ross Mt bike that I have fenders on.. it's my winter beater but its black frame, black fenders, black wheels.. and it reminds me of a real old harley.... and nothing beats riding in the rain without getting beat up the back of the head by a water stream...

Full fenders prevent unsightly butt stripes and back spackle...two things unappreciated by coworkers and our laundry equipment. Full fenders also show that you are a serious commuter.

My 1973 Schwinn would beg to differ about the uncool factor of fenders. They help add elegant aesthetics, as well as the functionality to that old bike.

And the PVC fenders I have on my mountain bike add an element of gnarly as well as an element of "keeping the mud out of my buttcrack" to said bike.

Heres what I do.

Go to the the dollar store and buy a kids acrylic paint set for a couplke bucks.
Invite over some friends, Spark up your favorite herb and paint your fenders all crazy, like back in the hippy times

Gets mucho reaction from people too

A month later, you can buy new fenders for 30 bucks and change the color scheme

A man is too cool for fenders

A wise man is too cool for a stripe down his back

Most women seem to have the right idea with fenders, at least the ones I see on the streets

Sure, no fenders is cool.
But a dry crack is even cooler.
And no crap on your shins is very cool.

I had to ride my fenderless bike in a downpour yesterday to buy new set of tires for my (fendered) commuter bike. I felt pretty cool until my feet went numb.

Funny, I think a commuter bike doesn't look right without 'em And a mudflap, too. Since adding a huge mudflap to my front fender, now I actually TARGET the puddles, because it's fun to splash through them without even getting my toes wet.

I think fenders look good on some bikes. You want a consistent theme.

not too wild of colors for paint job
street tires
some kind of rack
no shock absorbers

I think fenders don't look cool on a bike that otherwise looks like it is intended for racing.

What about full fenders, lights, a rack, and aero bars on the same bike? That's the setup I have now.

That would be fine if you installed the aero bars backwards so you could lean backwards and still steer, and then tell the cagers its a commuting lazy-boy chair.

I've come around on fenders. I grudging put them on my commuter last spring after a significant butt-striping episode, but now I think that fenders are so un-cool that they are actually cool. They are hard-core. They tell the world "Come hell or high water, I AM a commuter - not a fair weather rider".

I like fenders on bikes, they show the rider knows what the f*** they're doing riding in the wet, and not some gaper idiot on an poorly equipped bike.

People that know what they're doing are cool in my book.

I think my fenders and mudflap combos are cool AND sexy..

Mmmm, nice mudflaps…

…if you look closely, you'll see that the rear tyre on the bike on the left is mounted backwards…

Yeah, me too, I have no idea what others think because I go past them much too fast...

Funny, when I first got my OCR Touring with it's fat black Michelin tires my first thought was that it looked like a Jawa.

I've never understood why fenders are considered uncool. To me a bike looks stripped without them, like a car on blocks with the doors ripped off or something. OK, I suppose for weight weenies with a separate "fair weather bike" it's worth dropping the ounces, but I think generic bikes should have them.

I've always thought a bike looks too naked without them, for commuter/utility bikes anyway. They also add that retro/urban chic look, that I guess some of you consider gae.

Full fenders let the weak latch on the back and draft you without showering in your rooster-tail.

This may or may not be a plus.
