Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rude. Only 1 of my rides was actually outside, so my "real" weekly mileage was ~63, now fully into the "Zwift while the baby sleeps next to me" routine in the mornings. The fake miles boost my average speed, at least

And speaking of Zwift, I must say... riding a trainer every day sucks, full stop. However, it is (for me, at least) a much better workout in a much shorter timeframe. Yesterday's outdoor ride was a metric century for a cancer charity, but a lot of the guys I know from our local race scene joined. I found myself dropping a fair number of dudes who used to crush me in our local training race and hammer rides, and I have to think it's because adding a bit more intensity to my daily rides has increased my fitness versus just riding around for an hour at dawn like I normally did pre-baby.

I agree that if you have motivation and/or discipline, the trainer can be amazing especially for time-crunched cyclists. I am too lazy to train the right way and just use the trainer to maintain my modest fitness level during bad weather/road conditions.

Got a warning from a pretty reasonable cop on the way to work this morning. Stupid induction coil can't see me and the light doesn't go on a timer until 0800. I reluctantly agreed that, yes, in a purely legal sense I should have pushed the walk button. Cop said he has no expectation that cyclists will unclip at stop signs. Nice to know.

This is what I'm hoping for in an attenuated and age-controlled way. When I had a baby to take care of, I had a real "turbo" trainer and a Walkman.

Although Pennsylvania is a sometimes backwards state, we finally have a "dead red" law that allows a cyclist or motorcycle to go through a red light if the light does not change for them in a reasonable amount of time. I am pretty sure the motorcyclist lobby got that one through.

I saw that ride on Strava. I thought it was funny that "climb" was in the title of the ride and it had even less elevation gain than my typical metrics.

+1 - MN has a similar law. I would be surprised if there isn't something similar in MD that the cop wasn't aware of.

I suspect you're right, but he was fixated the walk signal and I wasn't going to sea-lawyer a warning.

Gotta get the girl ready for preschool and I'm trying to decide on whether or not to squeeze in a ride after I drop her off... Legs are still feelin' yesterday's miles, so it'll have to be an easy spin, if I do go... or I could just veg. Decisions, decisions.

Totally understand. If I was fairly certain that I was in the right, I would have felt conflicted - I wouldn't want to push buttons that don't need to be pushed, but at the same time it'd be nice to educate someone that may interact with other cyclists on the regular. If I *knew* that I was correct, it'd be all about how peeved I was at the moment.

Edited to add: a quick peek suggests that there's no dead red law in MD, VA or DC.

Monday is for vegging. It's humid today and supposed to hit 91. Walked to work this morning and may take the bus partially home. I hate it when it's like this.

That should be covered by inoperable/malfunctioning traffic signal statutes, IMO.

Ideally Idaho stop laws would be nationwide, and we could treat all stop lights as stop signs.

Correct. Monday and Friday are the days you reflect on the beating you took the other 5 days.

Lotsa flash flooding around the valley today, so the morning news is actually interesting for a change.

They are also contributory negligence states. That's much worse. Malfunctioning signal is treated as flashing red, but that's obviously different from "dead red." The entire area is also an auto-centric traffic hell.

IMO, a light that won't provide a green phase to a cyclist should be considered malfunctioning.

Abnormally warm September and October forecast. More 80s this weekend. I'll be heading towards the NJ coast on Friday and Saturday then will hit the shore on Sunday.

Preach on. I pretty much practice Idaho Stops, anyway, though.

It's funny - I never would have thought that Idaho would be the pioneering state with something like this.

Vegging, it is. Though I still dropped her off with the bike/trailer and I'll do the same for pick-up, so that's 6 miles with a lead parachute. Also, it's chilly enough this morning for me to wear a Rapha sweater with the hi-viz cuffs popped, so on-lookers will still know that I'm a serious(ly snobby) cyclist.
