Avoiding the Cold Weather Road Cycling?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lucky you...we get an average of 3-4 winter months (snow, blizzard, ice rain, name it!) with -20F
temperatures regularly.

I hate winter.

Many winters over the years I've travelled to a warmer place for a while. Even living here in Australia, we've headed over to Canada in June/July or August/September for 3-5 weeks to break up the Australian winter.

If I can't do that ... Zwift.

But happily it is spring and the weather is improving.

Ditto here in Socal; mid October and it's 80 today. On our Saturday shop rides, everyone complains when temps are 50 at the start!

Kinda! I'm on a one year job in North Carolina, with my job in Wisconsin waiting after that. So, yeah. Comparatively it will not be cold, and I won't have the couple months of permasnow that seriously shortens my road adventures.

Here in North Central Texas the winter flip flops constantly. A couple of days ago I rode in 100F heat. This morning, 37F. The sudden change provoked an asthma attack but it just takes a little time to adapt.

If I don't want to ride in the cold all I need to do is wait a day or so. It'll be warm again.

But, yes, the 13(!) months of cycling-compatible weather here is great. Of course, if you're not already living here, there is a very serious price (as in $$$$$$) to pay, unfortunately.

This coming Sunday is the big day and beer looking forward to it since we got back here on the 14th of April. Now its a 14 1/2 hour flight to Seoul then another 9 1/2 hours from Seoul to Colombo. Wishing for another uneventful no mis handled baggage like the last several years. Counting the hours here..

Last week on my mountain bike 84 degrees
Another Southern Californian checking in. Year round cycling is pretty much expected here. I have been very fortunate on my Sunday rides, very few cancelations. Now that I am reaching retirement age I have thought about relocating and weather is the main reason I haven’t . I am happiest on my bike and that is what keeps me here.

Last winter was spent in Thailand, primarily Bangkok, and I rode almost everyday in the morning. I'd usually go out about 7:00am and return around 9:00am. Sometimes a little longer. Generally I rode around 30-40 miles at 18-19mph on my old 2002 steel frame carbon fork LeMond Zurich. Most of the rides were at Rama IX park and Nong Bon which are right next to each other on the very eastside of Bangkok. I did venture out to Skylane a couple of times. It's a bicycle track that is 23.5km and circles around the airport. Nice track, but very flat. Not a lot of scenery and you are out in the sun the entire time which can get quite hot after 10:00am even in the winter.

My body and I are looking forward to the slower pace of winter gravel rides, skiing, and holidays with family.

Winter is as fun as I make it, so I don't feel the need to run away to warmer climates.

@trekmogul you need to make up your treachery to Trek by buying at least 5 world championship edition Madone framesets now that Pedersen is in the rainbow stripes.

As for riding in the winter issue? There is no bad weather just inappropriate clothing.

My interests now are leaning towards high end wrist watches like my new Patek Phillipe I bought this summer while in Dubai..

I'm not sure I understand. Maybe the Hasselblad you used to take these photos was set on the wrong image size, so it's hard to be 100% certain on the model, but it appears you have a Patek Philippe Travel Time 5524G.

If so, I need to ask... are you aware that this is the equivalent of buying a Pinarello Dogma F8 with factory colors and Ultegra rather than a Froome-replica Dogma F10 with FULL DURA-ACE GROUPO?

I thought you only wanted the HIGHEST and BEST version of any item, in which case you should be bidding on a Patek Philippe Ref. 1518, a rare perpetual calendar chronograph with moon phases. Very exclusive, and they are going for the extremely reasonable price of around $9-10 million at auction. The watch currently on your wrist is available to virtually anyone with $40,000 in their Louis Vuitton pocketbook. Come post more watch photos when you've upgraded from that pedestrian nonsense.

Dan what I want to say to some one like you, I will refrain from here on this forum that I have been a part of for quite sometime. There is always one like you no matter what forums it is if its cameras, Audio headphones, Watches etc etc etc..you get the idea. Why not if you can not play nice just pass on by..? You are incorrect on the model of my watch so before you start chirping model numbers, you might want to get all your ducks in a row buddy..
