How many bikes is reasonable to have?
I m currently cleaning and organizing my fleet. I need to get rid of more than half of it to feel a little normal, bc this is starting to be...diagnosable...so I created a space for only keepers just five fit in there. Everything else is going up for sale. every time I think I got them all put away there is always another one i forgot about.
I’m just keeping three 3 speeds 1 road 1 mountain bike.
Thoughts?

I don't put a number on it. I look at the logs. If I haven't ridden anything in awhile it get's passed on. I swap what I ride almost daily.

Damm the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
How many are reasonable? = N+1!
A wife is a different issue completely. Mine loves trips to Italy periodically. Worth 2 or 3 or more bikes.
Maybe the solution is Zero bikes - where do you vacation? visit relatives often? Drop off a few next visit.
edit: Reconsidering, ...... what size bikes?
Just call me greedy, not sympathetic.

Generally this forum is for enablers of bike hoarding only. Reasonable people who worry about the planet should post in the car free forum.

Im going to have to agree with you keeping things that are old and renewing them is a good thing. Most of my buddies are that way, of course their parents were for the 30s and were taught not to throw things that can have use later on.

The point where you are in control of your bikes versus when your bikes are in control of you.

I hate selling bikes (or anything, really), which I offset by seldom buying. As long as I have one decent race bike; a functional training bike; one gravel (or cross) bike; and a do it all hard-tail MTB I'm good. Now the MTB is long in the tooth could use a lot of updates (ditching the triple, going tubeless), but as I don't race MTB, that's pretty low priority.
I usually spend my $$ on just keeping my current bikes going; sometimes upgrading with new wheels, better saddle, power meter, etc.

Kudos to those with many bikes. I can barely keep up with the maintenance of the four I currently ride - there's always a chain that I left on too long, a cable that could use replacing; a pedal that could use repacking, brake pads that got too low. And trying to keep all those saddle bags properly stocked... I don't know how someone manages a whole fleet of 'em!

For me, the new number is six.
That'll have to be enough.
We'll be downsizing our living arrangements soon enough and I want to be ahead of that curve.

I am in the same boat as the OP. I have probably 10-12 rideable and at least half a dozen frames, wheelsets, components, etc. It's too much. These don't include my girlfriend's or her kids bikes that I store and maintain.
I need to get my addiction under control! I think half a dozen is plenty +/- one or two.
Maybe when I'm retired I'll increase the number of my fleet but it's a lot right now lol.

For me, the new goal was five given the space and desired 'room' to have in my place. It's now six... I currently have ten bikes with four I've been trying to sell (in the winter). Cutting into that number of six would be really saddening as no bike is a 'slacker.' Room for rescues? Soon.........

If you have enough space, you do not have too many.

I think I have like 7 or 8 bikes... out of those- one is new, so I don't have much of a ride history on it... but out of the rest- I pretty much only ride 3 of them.

My data shows 7.5 to be the optimal number.

...it's like cat ladies. You, yourself, are in a poor position to judge what's reasonable. When the SPCA shows up, it's already too late.
