I'm 50 and have been riding since I was about 20. My mileage varies as my interests change but it's been a constant that I ride at least in the summer months.

1. I ride a Madone 5.2
2. No supplements but for longer rides I use Hammer Gel, Skratch Labs drink mix & Hammer Recoverite
3. I don't think I've slowed down at all. I average about 32-33kph on round trip rides & that includes stop/starting at lights though I tend to head out of town so that's minimal
4. 30 years
5. I ride Mon-Fri on a 25k loop and on weekends I go for longer rides, usually about 80k each day. This weekend I did a metric century on both Sat & Sun
6. Daily. I bought the Madone on Aug 1/11 and hope to hit 10,000km but this August. I'm at 8,450 as of today

I also ride a Trek Madone 5.2, I have put over 30,000 miles on it over the past four years. I hope to upgrade to either the Trek Madone 7.0 or Domane when finances allow it. No supplements. I am starting my annual doctor visits in October of this year, soonest they could see me. Other than having to pee too often, I am in pretty good shape. I live in Montverde, Florida where the annual Horrible Hundred is held. I wish this rain would stop, what a depressing day this has been.

New forum member here. I am 57 years old.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I just traded up to a 2012 Roubaix Elite w/105

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Geritol, Viagra, Exlax, and I wear my Depends with my chamois.

Just kidding :-) No offense meant to anyone. :-)

usual vitamin stuff with some extra stuff due to my meds (like CoQ10).

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I only got back into cycling about 4 years ago, so I can only compare to my teenage years riding my Peugeot and Raleigh (ah, those were the days). i keep pushing myself for longer distances and higher cadences, within my limits.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Started as a young child, did road bikes in my teens. Switched to morotcycles for a while :-). Just started again about 4 years ago.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Mostly exercise rides- usually 15-25 miles. I like being outdoors and in nature too, so we go to the rails to trails in the neighboring state from time to time.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Our summers are short, so we try to go 3-5x per week during summer. I have an indoor trainer for the winter, but it is boooorrrriiinnng.

Welcome to 50+ SHV, as long as you take the Ex Lax after the ride and wear the Depends on the inside of your shorts I guess you can stick around The Roubaix Elite is a great bike, post up a picture in the forum body so we can ooh and aaah over it and let us know what type of PIE you like after your rides.

Mike,
We have several members over 70 that ride a great bit. Wait until you meet Rudy (Zonatandem) his and Kay's mileage totals will blow you away. Welcome to 50+ forum, too. I am a kid, just a young 55 here.

Hi Mike.

We have folks in their 80's riding 100+ miles per week, and lots of folks in teir 70's doing all sorts of things. I do a mixed bag - about 100+ miles per week, swim 4 hours per week, do a lot of weight lifting and stretching, and, until my achilles tendon started acting up from an injury, I walked a lot. I am working on the AT.

Please tell us your age.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I go for all-purpose bikes. The main one used to be a 1986 Ritchey Ascent, converted to a commuter.
In 2003 I bought a Turner 5 Spot for mountain riding.
In 2011 a Rivendell Bombadil replaced the Ritchey.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Just some vitamins from Trader Joe's, a multivitamin set and, occasionally, a joint support tablet. Not sure any of this helps.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I have slowed down these days, but that's mainly because I haven't ridden all that much in the last couple of years. Various reasons for this. Now I'm gradually working my way back into better shape.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I'd walked pretty much everywhere until when I was 7 my mother took me down the street to a gentle hill and put me on a bike. It didn't take long for me to find out just how wonderful riding was. I've never been far from a bike since then.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I do anything with a bike that I can. I don't like driving, but I do have a car for those times I need to go longer distances. I'm a sand sculptor, and haul my equipment to the beach on a Bikes At Work trailer. I ride in the local mountains because I like being out there. I ride along the beach, but not in the summer if I can help it. Errands, commuting, fun... riding a bike is a way to make any journey better. The longest rides I've ever taken have been about 60 miles. More typical for explorations right now is 30 miles.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
This is highly variable. When I was commuting to the Hyperion sewage treatmant plant, I was doing about 100 miles per week. Toward the end of my City career I was commuting downtown occasionally. Now that I'm retired, I've rediscovered walking. So, most days I either walk or ride someplace.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

Two wheels with lots of gears! I have a Scwinn Trailways hybrid and an old Scwinn Varsity.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Yes, but not because I've grown older. I take Vit. D as I turned up deficient in that, that's about it.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Hmmm, not sure what this means. Most seem to think it means 'race time'---never raced, so I don't know. Sure haven't slowed down in anything I can think of. There isn't anything I did at 25 that I'm not still doing at 51.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Off and on, all my life.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Short, rec. type rides for the most part. I like to find a trail and see where it goes. I do like a good road bike and a hill challenge though!

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

dunno...I'm sure it will vary as I'm usually not commuting anywhere.

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things.

I"m 51...and before the peanut gallery chimes in, I've already had my colonoscopy; my PSA is normal; I don't have arthritis, heart disease, hypertension or diabetes.

Thanks for the welcome! Its nice to be called 'youngster' for a change. I've seen pics of Red Rock but never been there. People don't realize how big Nevada is. I'm eight hours north of Vegas so I haven't been there in years.

When I was in high school, about 1956, some friends and I took a weeks trip, including Death Valley and Goldpoint, NV - ghost town - and broke down with a cracked carburetor - 1953 Ford - in Tonopah, where a nice mechanic found and removed a carburetor from a Ford in the junkyard and replaced it, and charged us all of $5.00.

Left me with a good feeling!!!

Please tell us your age.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I have a Schwinn fastback that was my "starter bike" a few years ago - starting to think about trading up

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Vit. D

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Actually over the last year I have sped up. I started riding about 5 years ago, then had to put the bike away and have a few foot surgeries (now have 4 pins in one of my feet) weight went up, and life went down. Took control in January and have lost 70 pounds, and taken up some serious riding.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
See above

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

I'll be doing my 3rd metric century this weekend. Other than those, which I love, I do some weekend riding around the roads here in the east bay.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

only get out about once a week now for 30-60 miles, but want to build up.

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things.

Still 56, my goal ride for this year is to do the 110 miles in the Tour de Tucson in November as part of a Rotary contingent.

Welcome to 50+ Dalameda, sounds like you have taken charge of your health and are doing a pretty good job, too. We love pics here so some views of you ride and yourself would be great. Oh, we require Pie preference to be listed, also. This is very important here as Pie is a primary 50+ fuel for after ride liei....er, coffee sessions. Ride safe.

Thanks for the welcome!

Here's the pix of the Roubaix. Not the best photo, as I only used my cell phone- I will try to get a better one soon.

It's the frame that came with the Rival groupset, but has the 105 groupset- someone else wanted the Rival on the 105's frame, so the swap worked out well for me.

Pie- hmmm, blueberry any day, but I also have a soft spot for a good Dutch apple crumb. :-)

Welcome Aboard Papabiker, who is the darling in your avatar? Glad you like the 50+, Dnvrfox lobbied for this forum several years ago so we would have a more mature place to discuss the needs, joys and pitfalls of riding past 50 and it is my favorite hangout when not riding. Some pics of those nice bikes would be nice, you have some good rides there. Let us know your Pie preference too, it is a mandatory piece of equipment for the post ride coffee stop to have a good slice of PIE! Any kind will do, but I believe Blueberry and apple (In most all forms) are the leaders, but I won't argue with any Pie, ever.

Thanks for the welcome, Bill. The delightful creature pictured is one of my granddaughters. What a blessing! Now, to the important stuff:

Cream pie! Banana, lemon meringue, chocolate, coconut cream - I loves me some cream pie.

I'm 58 and started commuting about 12km each way three years ago in all weather except snow/ice. Did some longer rides on the weekends and just finished my first self-supported camping tour, about 650km over seven days from Toronto to Montreal. I took the train home.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Mine is a custom built Salsa Vaya with albatross-style bars, racks, panniers, fenders, Brooks saddle. Part of the fun was spending the winter researching, specfying, ordering and assembling everything.
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Just the regular vitamins
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Just getting faster and better. So far so good.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
As a kid to school, a bit as a young adult and then back into it a few years ago.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Touring, commuting, short rec rides, charity rides, utility rides for groceries
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Daily, Last year totaled about 8000km
