Enclosed trailer?

I have searched and have not been able to find a small lightweight trailer that we could use to haul our tandem. Does anyone know of such an item?

We currently haul it in our Toyota Venza crossover but I would like to tow it behind a sedan or station wagon.

I know you asked about an enclosed trailer, however, those tend to be larger (think U-Haul or landscaper/contractor set ups). There are a lot of very low cost flatbed trailers available from Harbor Frieght and Tractor Supply (I imagine others as well) that could be modified. Some sort of enclosure could be fashioned if you are handy, or you could hire someone to modify one, or if you have a local Vo-Tech school you might be able to get a welding teacher to guide their students to make some sort of enclosure for not much more than the cost of materials and maybe a donation to the school.

Read the reviews on these low cost trailers. A big complaint is that most of them come with only 2-ply ( or maybe it's 4 ply, I can't recall right now) tires which aren't as durable and often fail. My guess is that these failures are related to heavy loads, if you were hauling nothing more than a tandem, you probably would not have any issues at all. That said, read the reviews and factor in better tires if you are concerned.

Also, consider used. Check Craigs list and talk to your local motor sport dealers (ATV's, Jet Ski's, etc.). They often end up with used trailers with trade-ins and they sell them cheap. (Make sure they come with the paperwork you would need to register and get plates)

Lets us know what you end up doing.

Below is a picture of my trailer, which is a used homemade (circa 1060's) midget car carrier that I use to haul my ATV and sometimes a tandem when the van is out of service. I picked this trailer up for $400. It is overkill for the bike, but it works and the price was right.

Look for enclosed 2 place snowmobile trailer. We have used ours for that purpose a number of times. You could even mount a number of different bike carriers on the floor and use them to secure the tandem without straps etc. maybe a bit pricier but the bike is protected and if you get an aluminum trailer they are pretty light and tow easily
