Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I haven’t seen mine since December 2019, we also had to cancel funerals for my grandfather and sister in law since this all started.

2020 has sucked. It’s why we’re going through the measures we are so we can see family. I can’t imagine there is more risk in our small gathering than there is going to the store. All of us stocked up on food, do curbside contactless shopping only and don’t go anywhere (except outdoor rides on empty roads).

Oh, and I’ll get a vaccine.

I thought one began to talk in terms of herd protection at about a 60% immunity rate, but maybe I heard wrong and I can't find numbers in a quick search.

Agree. Across the board, people are clinging to misinformation that will make them feel better right now. I suspect this means people are feeling pretty bad.

Considering whether I should register for the virtual turkey trot we do every year, as it benefits a local charity and as much as I don’t care for virtual events, it’s a good cause that should be supported.

I don't know much about lighting. As of now, this growth will be gone December 1st if mrs datlas has her way.

The light is behind you, harsh, and fluorescent. Office lighting is always horrible. Good flash with an umbrella would do magic.

I don’t make much of birthdays, but I do like the big traditions that echo back to my childhood. Those are gone anyway though, with my generation scattered across the country.

Seriously? Who doesn't like going to 2-3 different houses for Thanksgiving or Christmas all on the same day?

It just wouldn't be the holidays without constantly checking the time and thinking about all the people who are going to be upset because you're later than they expected.

I also enjoy the constant management of food intake, balancing the things that you genuinely look forward to and the things that you feel obligated to eat. Okay, if I can get away with only a token serving of Uncle James' turkey and gravy, and I factor in a 20 minute post-meal cool-down before a sliver of pie, then add the 45 minute drive to Alice's, I'll only feel slightly ill after 5 or 6 pierogi and I should be able to get in one or two of Anna's cookies...

I'd like to go to my sister's in the spring or summer rather than in the winter (dumb), but I don't make the rules.

Also, flying into the northeast in winter is teh dumbs. Too big a chance of flight issues, not to mention being unacclimated to the weather.

My family would almost always do Christmas and Thanksgiving at our house with just my parents, me, and my brother. We were always too far away from grandparents, cousins, etc to make visits practical since they are in middle Illinois and we were bouncing around the States to various Air Force bases. Once or twice when we were little my father rented something like a Cessna 310 (and I think once a Bellanca Viking) to shuttle everyone but that ended once my brother and I grew.

That all changed after my folks and I moved to northern Il. My father bought a V35 Bonanza that made the trip to the family hometown about an hour long, and 4 years ago I started dating my now wife who has a very blended family so it went from the holidays being one event to coordinating visits to 2-3 different households. Thankfully Christmas has never been a big huge event for our family, but the last few years I've been at 3 different celebrations within a 18 hour period beginning Christmas Eve evening.

Pierogis sound like a wonderful alternative to the standard American fare. I'm at least thankful that my family prefers turkey over ham.
