How wide a tire can a Trek Emonda (2020) accept?

Asking for my kid. Trek specs 25 or 28mm tires, so I suspect 28mm is the "official" upper limit, but that could be excessively conservative.

(I'm thinking of getting him some Rene Herse/Compass tires. I don't want to slow him down, so of course want to go as wide as possible.)

If he is riding an Emonda I can't envision why he would EVER need anything larger than a 28.. I weigh 195 lbs at present and ride 25's at 90 lbs work well for me on my Emonda.

Have you tried wider tires?

What if the OP has a different body than you, different hopes or expectations about how their bicycle should feel, and rides on different roads than you do?
