Among a few things, I think two of those reasons are 1) the stem is dead horizontal vs. the many that are angled up 2) The larger diameter tubes of the frame help visually "shrink" the converted stem, where as the stem will look a touch bulky on traditional diameter tubes.

I've posted my '80 Colnago Super here in the past, but I feel it deserves another photo now that it's received a few finishing touches! The latest additions are the Campy aero seatpost and the Dura Ace C35 tubular wheelset. As it sits in the photo, it weighs a svelte 19.6 pounds. Not too shabby for a 60cm steel bike.
The wheels made a huge improvement over the Ksyriums I had on it before. Not sure if it's because of the the aero rims, the weight savings, the tubular tires, or (most likely) a combination of the three... but the bike feels much more nimble and responsive.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really LOVE this bike, and I want to show it off!

I just finished this fun build up. 1991 Bianchi Virata frame made up in Tange Prestige. Originally had Shimano 600 tricolor now replaced with XT, XTR, Veloce. 😁
I went ahead and dimpled the chainstays for 650B conversion while I was at it.

Recently finished this 1987 Cannondale SR. Fork is a 1" threaded Kinesis out of a more recently built Motobecane. Componentry is slightly newer and consists of 7400 Dura Ace drivetrain and brakes, Rolf Vector Pro wheels, and Dean ti seatpost. Brooks saddle+bar tape and Thomson stem are the only truly modern parts. Please forgive the awful photo quality.

Love the shifting and hood ergos. Bike is about 23.5 lbs with my zonda wheelset.
Still has the Biopace 52/42 chainset and flat pedals.
Got a fantastic deal on the STIs: about $24 for both L & R, sold on eBay as "damaged/crashed".
Bought new hoods for $10, cabled them up: work fine!

Accelerates nicely with the Zondas on it, but will likely run with some older mavic wheels.
Fit 25c easily, and I may try 28s.
