ISO Recommendation - Inexpensive Shoes

Hi, all. I ride a hybrid bike with flat pedals....and have been wearing an old pair of Nike running shoes. I'm guessing something cycling specific will offer more comfort and "grippiness," but don't want to spend a fortune. What do you all wear?

What is your budget? I really like the Five Ten Freeriders at $100, the last time I looked, maybe 20% off up until Labor Day. They fit my feet and really grip the pedals, and the soles are made to accommodate the pedals' pins. For lower prices, used shoes are an option. I got about 4000 miles out of a pair over 4 years, and I'm on my 2nd pair.

Maybe once a year I'll buy clothes, usually at good discounters like Ross and Marshall's. I have very narrow feet and they often carry overstocks of brands that fit me well, including RBX and Adidas. Both have soles rigid and grippy enough for my hybrids' platform pedals, but are still comfortable for walking. The Adidas I got a couplafew weeks ago are a cross between old school Keds or Converse sneaks and Five Ten Freeriders, and cost only $20. The soles aren't quite as rigid and grippy as Five Tens but I don't need those for my casual rides on roads and groomed gravel/chat trails.

I'd like to be under $100 for sure. I wasn't sure if there was anything that "special" about cycling shoes, or if regular tennies are sufficient. I know my current pair needs to be replaced...treads are all worn down...I just about slipped off the pedal last week :-0

I'll do the Marshall's circuit in my area and see if anything turns up.

Get some Vans. Regular tennies will as well.

+1 on recommend for skate shoes -- Vans or Nike "SB" line.

I have a bunch of cycling shoes that I've bought used. People think they're going to ride but end up selling them.

Another recommendation to go to Marshalls/Vans/TJ Maxx and find a discount pair of Vans/Converse/etc skate shoes in your size.

Vans are good, but tuck any long lace loops. I've had them get caught on chain rings.
