Tektro to Ultegra brakes change

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tektro to Ultegra brakes change

Hello,

I posted this on the Mechanics forum with no luck so far. I figure I ask here as well.

My Jamis Xenith Race came with Tektro brakes, front have R540 and rear T740R (direct mount). I need to know if I can just get a set of Ultegra 6810s or if I need Ultegra 6800 for the front and 6810 for the rear. The Ultegra 6810 description says that I need to have the super SLR levers for correct leverage ratio. My bike has Ultegra ST- 6800 Dual Control STI levers. Please advise on which way I need to go.

Thank you,

Juan

You are probably just over thinking it, they should work just fine. If you wanted perfect 1:1 ratio, or what ever the ratio is, use the correct levers. Ultegra brakes are often put as the base line brakes for high end models. An example being them compared to EE brakes, or other carbon brakes. If they can perform like ultegra, they are usually acceptable.

Mechanics Forum should provide you the best answers. For now all I can say is that is sounds like you need the mixed brake set (F6800/R6810) and mixed set of levers too. Some shops stock and sell the individual calipers and levers (Art's Cyclery). Maybe also the UK guys like Merlin. The mixed setup must not be as odd as it seems. I would get the new calipers and try them with the old levers. If not satisfactory, then go for the new rear lever.

^ no, not a mixed set of levers. "Super SLR levers for correct leverage ratio" just means 6700 or 6800 instead of older 6600 (etc.) stuff.

6800 Front, 6810 rear. 6800 levers are fine.

FYI 6800/5800/9000 use a different pull ratio and don't work as well with older brakes, which may be why your tektro combo don't feel as solid as you'd like.

5700/6700/7900 used the same ratio as the 11sp stuff you mention (and I believe 4600 does as well). It's the generations before that (5600/6600/7800, 5500/6500/7700, etc.) that are slightly different.

I think they are of better quality plus I rode my GF Ridley with Ultegra group and love the way the brakes work compare to my Tektros.
