I was just browsing E-Bay when I noticed that E-Bay has a category for 18 hole hubs

So, of course, curiosity got to me as it would be impossible to lace a crossed pattern with 9 holes on each side.




Now, there are some legitimate 18 hole hubs designed for front radial laced wheels. Perhaps a 6x12 pattern on the rear.

But, it seems as if many of the sellers advertising 18h hubs just count half of the holes.

Price is a little off, don't ya think? I mean, I love ye olde Raleigh 3-speed (almost to the point of worshipping) but wouldn't pay nearly this much for it. Looks all original, meaning it needs a complete overhaul and new consumables. $675, $250 shipping. For a Colt.

Looks to have been taken down, but earlier there was an ad for a NOS early '70s Sports. Beautiful, no doubt, and for $700 would match the price for a brand new 3-speed city bike. But being 40-year-old NOS it would of course need an overhaul.

And this one. Not sure if it was a real ad but my friend sent it to me. This isn't so much bad or nonsensical (I'd say it's not) but it's wacky. I like it. I like the way the ad is worded. In all honesty, this looks like a lot of fun.

Yeah, but that probably just reflects the fact that the seller was trying whatever was normal at that time. My guess is he used it in triathlons.

Speaking of which, it's about time for the tri-geeks to start showing up on the Lakefront Trail here in Chicago with their aero setups, scaring the bejeebers out of the rest of us...

Absolutely no details to justify such a high price. But, 21 speed ==> 7x3 which is typically only found on low-end bikes, so one has to wonder.

It was common on bikes up to the XT level of components up to the mid 1990s, so it is possible that is a higher-quality vintage bike... but there is no indication that is what is being sold in that ad, and even if it was, it had damn well be a hum daddy of a classic to warrant anything close to that price... maybe it's Ned Overend's 1990 World Championship winning Stupjumper?

Pehaps the seller just got too many zeros, but all that about firm price and no tire kicking, one has to wonder.

$1000 vintage MTBs just haven't held their value. I think college kids were buying them by the millions.

Vintage road bikes might have been saved from that fate because maybe 1/1000 of the bikes being sold in the 80's and 90's was a truly nice road bike worth hanging onto.

The other thing that happened is that road racing bikes were being developed almost since day one, so by the 1980's it was a very mature technology. Whereas MTBs just started their development in the 80's. So there have been quite a few truly awesome changes in the MTB field recently that will lead those who really want to ride in the mountains to seek out new bikes rather than the cream of the crop from a few decades ago.

Also, there was never really an era where a good mtb was a 'fine handbuilt' bike - well, maybe there was but it didn't last very long, and they didn't make many bikes. Road bikes, however, have had hundreds of good quality builders for decades. The history of MTBs is really the history of Asian made mas produced MTBs (NTTAWWT).

I'll have to keep my eyes open for some quality retro MTBs. Unfortunately I don't remember what all those very expensive MTBs that were being stolen from college campuses actually were.

There were certainly were a few cutting edge bikes, such as Trek's foray into carbon MTBs in the late 90's.

Specilaized also made some ahead-of-their-time bikes out of carbon and titanium, and their (iirc) extremely brittle mmc. I doubt many have survived to today, unless, as the CL ad says, they were only ridden once.

You have to wonder why some sellers think they have a bike worth a fortune, but then put in so little effort with presentation.

No description of the model, parts, etc.

That Merckx might be an OK frame for a little person, although it is certainly rough. But the bike as a whole looks quite scrambled.

I suppose it is the people who don't know a $100 bike from a $5000 bike that also don't know how to describe it to a bike person.

Or, they just copy a description off of the internet, hoping it matches

Maybe it's the quill stem I saw on EBay once advertised as a "Maximum Height Brand Stem"? Because, I'm certain that the line with the inscription "Maximum height" is sitting at least a full inch above the nut......
