OK it is your choice, but cab fare to/from the airport for work purposes most definitely is a legitimate travel expense.

Sounds like a cab ride would have been more dreary as well as more expensive.

More walking this week!

Monday and Tuesday I had night classes ... so walking from work to class.

And most of my lunches were spent on an ongoing hunt for formal attire ... without too much success.

Then after work today, Rowan and I walked around downtown to take care of a few errands.

Walked to class
Walked to get vacuum cleaner bags
Walked to pick up tickets for our next symphony
Walked to an information session after work one day
Took the bus to the local uni and walked back
Walked on the hunt for a formal dress for these symphonies and things

I rode to Conway for Bar Camp Conway gave a talk on 3D Design for 3D Printing and sat in on 3 other talks and then rode home.

Conway is about 32 miles away, so I ended up starting at 4AM, going down River Mountain Dr in pitch dark. River Mountain is long, steep, fast and unlit.I crossed the Arkansas River and pedaled through the suburbs until I hit the country. Rolling hills all the way. I made it to Mayflower just as dawn was breaking. I didn't see anything of the oil pipeline spill. Coming into Conway I met a couple of packs of loose dogs. A commanding voice and swinging a water bottle at them so the water flew out at them persuaded them to not play rough. I missed an important turn in the google maps because the street was unmarked. My detour took me by a McDonalds so I opted for a bacon egg and cheese biscuit.

Bar Camp was interesting, speakers are volunteers, and only 8 people volunteered. Turned out I was the only person talking about real high tech. A few people were talking about creativity. A couple talked about being entrepreneurs.

I knew riding home would be more difficult. There was a strong headwind just about the entire time. I stopped for food in Mayflower. While the oil leak may not be obvious to the passerby, its still headline news in the local paper. Riding was slow progress and I took frequent breaks because my perineum and arms were aching. I learned a little about saddle design that I will have to remember next time I buy one. It doesn't hurt much till you pack on the miles. I passed the same dogs on the way back, so I guess they spend zero time in the house.

Great photos Machka!

Here in the US Midwest, there's a new fashion of riding gravel roads (of which there are a gazillion in our state). Friday I did a few miles of MUP after work and then a few miles of old dirt road just to see how my old tourer would stand up.

Actually my old Bianchi stood up better than I did

Went from home, to Pioneer Park and back, stopping to grab a couple of beers from the beer store on my way home.

Nice photos, and it's very scenic there. Looking at the linked photos - do they always light that bridge up like that at night (maybe for aircraft?) or just on special occasions? That's a lot of light!

The bridge lights up every night.

But it is missing a few bulbs just now.

Lighting up bridges seems to be the new fad. The Two Rivers Bridge and Big Dam Bridge, bicycle bridges around Little Rock light up. One night I flew over Little Rock at 33,000 feet. The bridges were very visible.

More light pollution.

They've been lighting up the Tasman Bridge for years ... not a new thing. It's a tourist attraction.

Lots of gravel around where I live, and all of my preferred commuting routes include several miles of gravel as most auto traffic takes the only paved route. I was riding home last fall on a paved road and had pulled over to eat some ripe plums I found growing by the road side. A guy pulled up and asked if I knew the road I was on turned to gravel. I said yeah, and thanks, but it was funny to me. I was on my Fargo, but when most people see the drop bars I guess they think it's a road bike.

Today is beautiful and I wanted to ride but my legs are dead from hauling logs out of the woods for the past week, doing some pre-commercial thinning in my forest. I have not found a way to take it easy and still get up the ridge in the middle of my commute, even with 18 gear inches. I did walk downtown at lunch to the credit union to use the ATM, then back the other way to a grocery store to stock up on lunch stuff for my office. Walking is good.

Yesterday it was 70F here and right now it's snowing. April really is the cruelest month.

I rode to a job interview at a pizza restaurant.

Discovered that my dress shoes are longer than my tennis shoes. That meant guaranteed heel strike on my panniers every time the crank went around. Since I was in a hurry, the work around was to put my feet on the pedals and not in the toe clips. The toe clips scraped the pavement, but at least I wasn't kicking my pannier off the bike every 3 feet.

On the way back, I stopped at a couple of grocery stores and then after writing the thank you letter for the interview, rode to the post office to mail it. I saw a muskrat swimming in the creek when I stopped to look. Saw fish swimming in another creek.

Sounds like a productive day. Hope you didn't get your nice shoes wet looking in the creek!

Our maximum temp today was 31 degrees--record cold for this date. I found my long johns and winter coat that I thought were done for the year and took a little walk along the Grand River. I saw ducks and heard Canada geese.
