Where Did You Ride or Walk Today?

Not too much walking or biking lately except biking to work and even with that I missed a few days due to back pain. However this morning's commute was a good (albeit cold) ride.

I went for a walk at lunch today ... as I do most days ... but today, I took photos.
I walked along the waterfront, and turned to look back at Mt Wellington ...
Then I walked out to the cenotaph where I knew I could get a good view of the first cruise ship of the season ...
While I was there, I figured I'd get a shot of the Tasman Bridge ...
And another shot of Hobart and Mt Wellington on my way back to work ...

Taking long scenic walks, six or seven miles every day. Luckily, a stretch of days off coincided with sunny cool weather with autumn leaf colors at their peak. Amazing, like a drug-free acid trip!

The cenotaph I mentioned in my previous post ... I walked past it today and figured I'd take a picture ...
The cycleway ... I walked out to the bridge ...
The Tasman Bridge ...
And back in the centre of town again ...

Monday I had to see the chiropractor, so I biked the roughly 10 miles there, got my neck cracked, then leisurely rode home via about a 25 or 30 mile route home. Beautiful day.

On today's 5 km lunch walk ... I made it to the botanical gardens! Just. I pretty much had to turn around and go back when I got there. However, I was hindered by my skirt. I had changed my shoes for the walk, but a long-ish pencil skirt just doesn't work well for longer walks. I'm going to have to start bringing shorts to change into.
My plan, over the summer, is to see how far I can go in a lunch break, and what I can see. I'll head out in different directions several times a week. Some days I'll have to run errands etc. at lunch, and that's OK, but I'm planning these exploratory walks two or three days a week.

Lake St. Clair on a clear sunny morning. I was too late for a lake sunrise, but arriving early enough will be easier as sunrise gets later for several weeks.

I have a bit of a smile when you post about Lake St. Clair ... it's a lake in the middle of Tasmania. One of the deepest, I believe. But I'm pretty sure that's not the one you're referring to ...

Beautiful day .... just perfect for a walk (or a bicycle ride, if I didn't have to work).
I found a new route and walked 4.4 km all up on it ... through a rose garden in full bloom, along a soldiers memorial walk, several great views of the Derwent and most recent cruise ship. It's a big one ... apparently we are supposed to have a few really big ones this year.
I didn't have my camera with me, so this is a newspaper photo of the cruise ship in dock right now on a previous visit ...

The last couple weeks have been really good ones for walking ...
31.3 km on the week ending the 10th of October
34.2 km on the week ending the 17th of October
I've been walking during the day as usual + walking after work.
This week, however, may have a little less walking and a little more cycling.

This week, however, may have a little less walking and a little more cycling.
17.1 km on the week ending the 24th of October ... I was studying for my final exam that week
26.8 km on the week ending the 31st of October
22.8 km on the week ending the 7th of November ... so far. The week isn't quite over yet.
But I'm up to 910 km for the year.
Most of my recent walks have been with fitness in mind ... trying to build some strength.
I've also been climbing stairs and I've climbed at least 1470 flights since I started keeping track on Aug 17.

I asked my dog "Merckx" if she would like to go for a ride in the golf cart.
I did not have to ask twice. We went about ten miles to the park.
We have the most awesome sidewalk system imaginable, including passing over or under the busiest roads.
It is unseasonably warm, so I appreciated all the shade.
And, Merckx appreciated the many lakes.
That look of intensity never left her face.

Lake shake! I tried to capture it, but you get the idea.
There was a lot of wildlife around. This is where the birds come for the winter. I was not very good at capturing them.
There were lot of cyclists, but I failed to grab a photo of any of them.
We traveled about 5 miles on foot, through the park and the neighborhood nearby.
These are the days that make you glad you live here.

LOL, well ya, even today it was snowing with 40+mph winds, we have full rain gear on and lucky for her the wind was coming from our backs on the way to her work. Now yes, I got the full brunt of the wind on the way home! :O Lucky it's only a mile each way!

As for today, it was a beautiful afternoon, about 50 degrees, with that soft sunshine you get this time of year. I walked to employee health to get my flu shot. They were supposed to be open until 4:30. I was there by 4:20 and they were already closed. It must be nice to knock off work a little early! So, it was a wasted trip. At least I didn't waste any gasoline on it!

Rode out to the lake, then cruised some rural roads for a few hours testing out a new head light.

Sunday - Today we walked 5.6 km. For some reason, I didn't feel much like cycling today. Might have had something to do with the century (100 miles) we rode yesterday.
But it was a lovely day for a walk so we headed to the beach! All of this is within walking distance of where we live.

I worked three 12 hour midnight shifts on a row, and we wwere quite busy and physically active for all of them. Yesterday (Monday) was my first day off. Even though the weather was superb for November, I was trying to rest so I deliberately kept my walk short, just 50 minutes around my neighborhood with no particular destination.
One thing I noticed on my walk is that when I first set out, my mind is buzzing with thoughts, worries, plans, etc. I also feel a bit of chest pain when first setting out.
But after 10 or 15 minutes, whether walking or riding, my mind quiets down and I just notice the sights around me and the pleasant sensations of rhythmic muscle movement. I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but my chest also quits hurting. Whatever, moving around the world under my own power is certainly good for the mind and the body!
