Why so much hate for Gatorskins?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some more science. The slower one goes, the more slogging around slower tires is like carrying additional weight. When riding up a 10% grade, even going from a fast last-generation tire like the GP4Kii to GP5k is equivalent to shedding a pound of weight. Lower, slower, and coming from Gatorskins, that's liposuction territory. Consider that the next time being able to carry one fewer inner tube seems like an advantage to Gatorskins.

oleg232000 , WhyFi , rubiksoval cool it. I just checked this thread for interest reasons and I have found little to nothing of value in this last page or so. Please stop diluting the content on our forums.

Thanks,

On an entirely separate note, Dwight is my favorite character in The Office . And maybe Creed too, so weird.

As for me, I don't like the Gatorskins. I'm an elite level racer like rubiksoval and train a lot on the open road. In East County SD (popular destination for longer training rides) there are a lot of goatheads and junk, but still I don't get flats at what I would call an unreasonable rate and I prefer the feel of a more supple tire. Really tubeless makes the most sense around here but I'm reluctant to upgrade on the road b/c again, I just don't flat that much. MTB is a different story, tubeless all the way.

I do latex tubes and top notch tires on my race wheels. Training wheels, box rims, high spoke count, butyl tubes and mid range tires. Not gatorskins though, too harsh! For the training wheels, usually I just get whats on sale, right now it's the Bontrager R3 which I've been happy with. Had never rode a Bonty tire so far, I'd say they're fine and I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again at the same price.

Aside from one person's repeated regressions into fallacies and insults, posting the actual physics behind the speed of various tires is pretty useful information.

Tell a person riding 100 miles a week that he could do it ten minutes faster (or ride an extra couple of miles in the same time period) simply by not using such awful tires and the picture gets a bit clearer (for most people).

It's certainly germane to the discussion.

I'm also fully aware of this possibility that this may have run it's course - leaving it open to see if we can generate some meaningful dialogue.

Oleg:
No hate for Gator Skins here, but what used to be true may not be true today. I used to ride on Gator Skins. They were less prone to flats than some other tires I have ridden <cough, cough, Special...cough, cough>.

I understand why some folks think tubeless are a mess and a pain. But once I came up with a formula that worked, they have been much better, even running at 105 PSI.

In the past year and a half I have 6,000 miles on GP5000s including 2,000 on my tandem which has formerly worn Schwalbe Marathon and Conti Top Contact tires with tubes. On roads in places where things freeze and pavement cracks. And inebriated University students can't seem to put their bottles in the trash. All running tubeless. Zero flats. Not sure why you think modern tires running tubeless are so prone to flats.

Hey like i said previously, looking forward to trying the GP5000s once the gatorskins run out.

Oleg:
I hope your experiences with GP5000 mirror mine. With zero flats the first year, I switched the touring tandem over to tubeless GP5000s and I don't regret the decision. But I do carry a spare tube at home and a spare tire and tube when touring.

I've gotten many sidewall slashes on the old GP4k's, which seems to be their only consistent demerit IME and based on internet boards. I think there is a certain amount of "luck" (or lack therof) that comes along with getting sidewall slashes though and some seem to be more prone than others. It's not a common flat mode. Outside of that they were a great tire and I'd still buy them any way if they were on sale.

I have some GP5000 right now on my race wheels, they seem nice enough and I haven't gotten any flats. I also only rode them from Jan through early March of this year when racing came to a halt in SCNCA. So the jury is still out I guess. Eventually I'll have to give the wheels back to the sponsor and at that point I'll test the tires on my training wheels.

I'm also a fan of the GP4 season, perhaps an intermediate between the 4k/5k and Gatorskin in regards to flat protection and suppleness. They're a bit spendy though.

Oh didnt you know? If you are not in on the group think then you are a troll and subject to endless snarky remarks from a select few that tirelessly patrol the forums to make sure anyone either fall in line or leave on their own
