Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wishon Drive. The 15% grades will have you "wishon" you had a 32 sprocket in the back (or were driving in a car). Bow bow bow!

At least I knew there was fresh water nearby. Definitely looks like "Treasure of Sierra Madre" country. No banditos encountered, fortunately.

^much ouch. fewer cars in august? i guess those permit quotas for the mt. whitney trail are working

usually takes till the fourth week of august for the sierra mosquitos (east side) to vanish. with this year's ****ndanza, guessing they'll hang around
till first week of october.

nice pics. i really need to do a dedicated weeklong climbfest up there to properly abuse the body.

there activity is low right now. from lone pine to the store by the whitney trail start i wasn’t bothered.
now…the heat when back on the owen’s valley floor was bothersome.

good to hear. usually, they're the worst in the shade, near a body of water of any combo of the two. really would have
potentially only been a problem up by the store/waterfall/road's end on whitney portal road. onion valley generally good
because of the lack of shade and lack of water. did run into mosquito difficulty in august at the top of horseshoe meadows
maybe a decade ago tho before i got near either shade or water. weird.

yah,,,the summer descent into owens valley is like opening an oven door to check on the progress of your frozen pizza or
like you've got a giant hair dryer on high pointed at you. hotttt.

From the Harlem Valley Trail ride 7/28/19 in Duchess County NY. Yes I know there is a car in the background but I still like the shot.

Hwy 190, heading east over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Summit is ~18 miles ahead @ 7000 feet. If only the Donner party had known about this route.

The view from near Washington Pass when I rode it for the first time 20 years ago. It started raining somewhere before Rainy Pass. The rain then turned to snow as we got higher. When we got to Winthrop it was warm and there were tumbleweeds. Walked into the KAO office to discover that they had $0.99 beers for sale. I felt I had earned one. So nice to have the next day off.

Here's an even nicer one, Portman PATH, separated from traffic and LED signals just for bikes that prevent cars from turning when you have the green, and again NOBODY on it except a guy in a Segway.

I've heard locals refer to it as the Mighty 190. It is a total blast on a quick moto or good handling sports car. Never experienced it on a bicycle.
