What are fenders for?

Do they help with wind or just for asthetics?

They're to make your bike look more steam-punk.

You will be happy you have them in the rain and snow. On dry days I don't use them. I have the removable kind.

Yes, they help so much with the wind, that the UCI banned them for racing.
That is why you never see them in competition.

If it's a troll, it's a pretty sad one. Where's the argument? The controversy? The flaming? The comparisons to mid-1900s German fascist regimes?

What is the Internet coming to when something like the OP is considered worthy of the term "troll"?

Keeps water from slinging off your tires onto your person. Pointless in dry weather. They add wind drag and add weight.

You know when his nick is mjoekingz28 or I'm Joking. Also, if he isn't a troll and someone simply not bright enough to understand what fenders do, should they really be allowed on the road on a bike?

I started running fenders when I lived in Schaumburg IL, just because of all the goose crap.

When I ride on some of the roads around here, I can hear little bits of stuff hitting the fenders sometimes, so I know they're catching something. Plus, since I use my bike to commute to work, it sure would suck to get caught there without them in the rain.

Could be just a total noob, raised in an auto-centric culture with no knowledge of cycling beyond vague memories of the childhood BMX. It's not like they talk about fenders on television; the all-mother, the electronic teat from which western culture doth suck, that holy temple where we all learn our life lessons. Honestly, how could you troll such a non-contraversial topic like fenders?

Better a bike than a car.

i run fenders (and rear panniers) so that when i pass roadies they feel twice as bad about being passed by a commuter. the protection from wet/mud is just an added bonus.

I have fenders on both of my commuters, even though the fair weather bike does not see any rain, it still serves as a backup winter bike, plus they help a little in cutting down on the dust accumulation on the frame and chain when I take some or our local trails.

I got fenders on my Sirrus so the pretty blue frame stays shiny and pretty longer Ever have a rock come up off the front tire and hit your face? I have...Fenders eliminate that! Keeps chain a bit cleaner, too!
