Mad dogs and Englishmen... 51 miles on a hot day, 97°, but the humidity was around 12%. I stopped 7 times at a park, river or irrigation canal to soak my jersey and sunsleevs. Jersey dried up very fast. I drank a lot of water, even stopped at a stand where 3 very young girls were selling lemonade and cans of flavored seltzer water. $1 for 1/2 a cup, prices have gone up. Ended up with salt stains on my shorts. The wet jersey kept me very comfortable. It's going to be in the 90s for the next ten days at least. It's going to be hot for the next 3 months. I passed a lot of riders on a Tour de Cure ride. They were struggling up a long steep hill while I barreled past them at 35 mph. I had to climb back up the same hill 3 hours later I took a refreshing cold shower when I got home. It will be cool or cold showers until the weather changes. I'm not English so I must be a rabid dog.

Dallas seems to be upping its game, but yeah, I'm pretty happy in Ft Worth. I think part of the secret is that the cycling community is still pretty small and everyone knows everyone.... and the roadies get along with the hipsters get along with the MTBers, mostly.

60 miles yesterday in 103, feels like, degrees. Glad that ride was over with. The heat was really starting to get to me. 25 miles this morning. Was going to do 40 but my wife got to the van while I was on my break and said she was done with her ride. Didn't want her waiting in this heat so I ended mine.

This latest heat wave has brought us multiple, serious heat alerts with heat indexes reaching 111 F, along with air quality and ozone alerts.

My rides usually leave me feeling refreshed and exhilarated. But the last couple rides left me feeling blah with slight headaches.

So I decided to try to get out earlier in the mornings, shorten my rides, and lower my cadence on the single speed.

Today's ride was only 75 minutes, and I feel somewhere between exhilarated and blah, but no headache.

I am just starting to build this kind of mileage- yesterday I logged 38 and felt tired but ok. slept well - today I feel dragged out and borderline ill. Is this normal? (M, 68)

Put in 20 miles with my bride and our 10 year old. We tried to get out early to avoid the heat, but it's just hot here in Texas! Actually looks like it's hot across the country.

Oh-my the heat. I REALLY miss riding at 9,000 feet. 25 mi @10.1 avg mph and temp 97 plus in Jacksboro, TX. Headed for Houston - hotter and higher humidity.

Between 55-60 miles yesterday mixed gravel/pavement in the Palouse area of Washington state for our inaugural C&V Tour de Palouse. Did another 50 miles today on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. Photos will be posted in our thread in the C&V group.

This one one of the better times of the day - nice, fast downhill

20 miles Sunday evening after a 40 minute warmup on the indoor trainer. Mostly waiting for sunset and slightly cooler temps. It was still 98F when I started and I was exhausted by the time I got home, although my average speed was about the same as always. My BP dropped to 88/55, which is unusually low for me. I missed my window of opportunity for adapting to heat this spring, so it's taking awhile to get accustomed to riding in hot weather again.

Honest question... Is there a problem with doing this? He likes riding (actually we haven't found a sport he doesn't like) and doesn't have a problem with keeping up with us. We did 15.2 miles on Saturday. He completed a 50 miler when he turned 9. We haven't ridden much this year as baseball took us deep into the playoffs and then swimming started up. So, despite the heat, we are trying to get rides in.

I should note that there are days when he rolls his eyes at us wanting to go ride, just as there are days he wants to ride. But he goes and then has a good time.

Not really. Just me thinking back on my childhood. Kids that age love to please their parents, and when I was that age I spent time with my godmother (my mom had to work) and she loved fishing.

From the first moment she took me fishing with her I hated it. I though it was a primitive and unnecessary way to get fish (not seeing it as a pass-time activity). What was worse, she used live bait and between that and the cleaning I just wanted to vomit. Because I didn't want to make her feel unhappy I pretended to like it and never told her how very much I hated going on those fishing trips.


On the other hand, she also taught me to garden and over 4 decades later I still love gardening, and have a garden on my balcony right now. Also, my friend would tell me how much he hated learning the piano, but as a kid, I remember wishing my folks could have afforded one. Sometimes there's just no way to know what works, or how things will turn out.

The storms that blew through late last night helped moderate the temperatures a little, but jacked up the humidity. That didn't help the heat index.

I waited until the roads dried up to embark on a 78 minute ride through some nearby neighborhoods. It wasn't exhilarating, but no headache either.

It's a Carradice CarraDura Maxi Seat Pack which attaches to the saddle rails and seat post using Velcro straps. Capacity is about 6 litres. Not sure if it is still available as it is not listed on the Carradice website.

High of 103° Farenheight (dry desert air heat upper western US near Canada border) when leaving work for home for the day, I filled up my hydration pack with 3 bottles of water and some ice for my 12 miles, 19.5 km ride home in about 35 40 minutes, , also had my cooling towel around my neck and no sweats, literally. although I stopped and rested for few minutes to cool off in the middle of my 600 feet steep climb hilly part of my rerun trip home, Not too bad for an old kinda overweight mid 50 year old guy I thought, Cheers.

40 nice miles on a very hot day. Thunderstorms moving in around mid morning so we took that as a challenge to finish the 40 miles before the rain came.

21 miles today as a Bike Commuter. Beautiful summer day - a bit hot but comfortable. And a tailwind most of the ride home!

51 Mile. It's either ride in the heat or stay home. Stopped at one of the canals I usually cool off at but it wasn't flowing. I backtracked a hundred yards and had to reach through a fence to reach the water. The fence was strips of some plastic mesh about an inch and a half wide and very thin. I was soaking my jersey when I brushed against the fence. Sucker was an electric fence and I got a mild shock. Scared me more than it hurt. Remember out there, Don’t pee on an electric fence.

16 miles late Tuesday/early Wednesday morning after 40 minute indoor HIIT session. Too hot to ride earlier in the day. And I wanted to test ride after putting new padded tape on the bar. Much nicer on my injured shoulder on real roads, especially chipseal. Shoulder still aches after about 15-20 miles but it's slowly coming along.

A good day: 13.45 mi., 1:00:15. About 1 mph above my usual speed. Felt strong and was able to turn over slightly taller gears.

I heard the weatherman say that today will be the first day in about a month we will have a high temp. below the daily average. It's still 90 F.
And with the daily afternoon and evening showers the humidity is sky high. It was about 80% when I started out on my ride this morning.
Nevertheless, I am sticking to my plan of riding early in the morning, doing shorter rides and lower cadence on the single speed.

Got in 84 minutes.

Beautiful day in Indiana. Had to resist the urge to again bike to work this morning - wanted to get out for a ride after work, which I did. 20 miles over the White river bridge, out into Decatur township and then Morgan County. And back again. Saw freshly painted raindrop Dan Henrys on some of the roads: Saturday will be the annual Ride Across Indiana. 160 miles from Terre Haute to Richmond. None for me thanks, but a tip of the helmet to those who do RAIN.
