Did we start with a grandson and morph over to a granddaughter?
As @mstateglfr mentioned, there are many good used deals, especially on the smaller kids bikes if you wish to tinker.
My nephew grew so quickly that I couldn't keep up with him. I wanted him to ride road bikes. I started with a 24" at 8 or 9, then went to 650c. I wish I had started with the 650c. Then to a 700c drop bar hybrid conversion. Probably time for a bigger one.
Many of the kids bikes will fit a range of sizes. I have some shorter adult friends. Around 5 foot, or less. They'll ride either the 26" MTBs or 24". They prefer the smaller ones, but they aren't growing any taller either.
