what is the hottest "overkill" hybrid now?

It used to be the 7.9 (my opinion)

I don't think I will ever seen someone with a FX 7.9 unless I am in Beverly Hills, expensive. Most hybrids are used for A to B, or a quick stroll to the park. The FX 7.9 for Zip code 98210.

i just bought the Sirrus Pro Carbon - it is a really nice bike, but I'd hardly call it overkill or Rodeo Drive. Just a nice, comfortable bike with - in my opinion - low-mid to mid-mid-range components.

Overkill would be customizing something like a FX 7.9 or a Sirrus Pro Carbon with Campy Super Record EPS!

If you like a flatbar road bike then the 7.9 and other s like are not overkill.

This, Specialized Bicycle Components , with rack and fenders attached to the included mounts, would be ideal.........

What? A 2800 dollar bike has low components. That means most hybrids have parts about to explode! But seriously your bike has the best of the best parts within hybrid standards.

True based in industry standards for hybrids as they are made and marketed today - Ultegra group set and a decent saddle etc - but not Di2 Dura Ace or Campy Super Record EPS and so forth - if they come out with $6000 to $15000 hybrids as they do with road, mt and triathlon bikes then you would see the highest end components. But the market apparently isn't there for it.

I wouldn't say "overkill", but I think the Giant Fastroad comax looks the hottest right now. It looks like it should be priced $1000 more than it actually is. Sweet bike!

I'm debating the Sirrus Pro Carbon and Giant FastRoad Comax, but I didn't like the Cannondale Quick 1. Anyone have any other ideas?

What about the Cannondale Slate?
A Quick Ride on Cannondale?s New Slate All-Road Suspension Road Bike | The Radavist

Ok, so it has drop bars. You could put straight bars on it if you wished

I like this one over the Cannondale Slate. The Slate is nice but the lowest model Slate is 50% more expensive than the highest Giant Co Max.

The overall shape of bikes are very nice. It's just the graphics that are over the top. Some folks like subtlety in their bikes. That is something Giant has yet to master.

Isn't that why the OP was titled overkill? Maybe we should have called it overpriced.

That may be true, but I am puzzled why Trek would go with a muted, plain Jane look for the 7.9? It's a decent bike that is a bit over priced. I would think someone paying that much might like a bit more visual excitement.

Great question @side_FX I wish I had an answer. My best guess is that the bike was designed by a team. The team, through market research, decided that's what graphics should look like.

If if you have been around the sport for a while you can chart the change in styling. The seventies had very understated paint and graphics. The eighties ushered in neon, splatter and fade paint jobs. As AL took over for steel, with it's bigger tubes, graphics and decals, took over for wild paint jobs. AL and CF lend themselves to much more bold graphics than skinny round tube steel frames. One thing I noticed is that everything is done with decals not paint. Which I am sure is due to how expensive custom paint is.

Of course everything I just wrote is opinion not fact. So take it for what it's worth.
