National Bike Rental Service starts up

Renting a bike nationwide just got much easier

Posted by: Budget Travel, Wednesday, Apr 15, 2009, 1:10 PM

Muck around the Internet for a half hour, and you'll come up with dozens of half-baked ideas whose purpose is often not entirely clear. Amid these hare-brained schemes and pictures of baby animals, George Gill and Ray Schuhmann of RentaBikeNow.com have invented a tool for cycling enthusiasts that seems so obvious, it is hard to believe it didn't exist before.

At RentaBikeNow, travelers interested in biking in 37 states and 144 U.S. cities can reserve bikes to their own specifications (such as cruiser or racer), and receive tour maps of their selected destination. The site lets you remove uncertainty about what you will find at a bike shop when you arrive, whether you need a child's seat or a bicycle built for two. The only labor intensive part of the trip is the actual biking.

Some cities and states, such as Idaho and New Mexico, don't have any shops participating yet, though owners Gill and Schuhmann have their sights set on plugging those gaps. They also plan on expanding RentaBikeNow to include worldwide listings.

With all the green, clean, and healthy benefits of exploring a new city by bike, it's hard to imagine that RentaBikeNow is on any other path than one headed straight for success.

This is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor with that idea, DG.

You could become a millionaire!

I tried out their web page. The design and flow of the search and transaction is not so good. I tried out Madison, WI and received information only on the rental location closest to whatever address I used. If visiting somewhere, you really don't know where you might wind up in a city, so it would be best to know all of the options.

But it is a start.

None in Denver, closest was Lafayette, many miles north.

None in Glenwood Springs, closest was Crested Butte, which really has no direct roads to GS, and is at least 50+ miles away.

I wonder if there is a way we could forward some sort of pre-written notification of this service to our local bike shops. Certainly a request from a potential customer would be an impetus for a bike shop to sign up.

If we all did this, it would mean that if we went somewhere else, the service might be available.

Right now, I do a google for "bike rentals" in the area to which I will be traveling. The results are always deceiving and sometimes confusing, involving many emails and phone calls.
