Bonus Christmas Gift

When Santa brings your kid a new scooter that comes with a 5mm hex wrench for adjusting handlebars, which so happens to be the size that went missing from your hex set a few weeks ago.

Well, you can't survive without the 5 but I'm not sure I would rely on those "give-away" hex wrenches. I got a new office / computer chair today and threw those wrenches away instead used my own, which I have confidence in. I have a bunch of them in a drawer as I am a tool pack-rat, but realized I would probably never use them.

what's wrong with using them.... I have never had an issue.... if they wear out then throw them away.... can never have too many 5's

Well, cheap, soft hex wrenches, particularly smaller ones, are likely to round out in the bolt head and damage the bolt's recess in the process if any significant torque is needed. Since good quality hex keys are relatively inexpensive anyway, why not use good ones?

If you've got a Fastenal store near you (who doesn't?), walk in there some day and ask them for a 5 mm hex wrench. $2 later and you'll walk out with a brand new, high quality tool.

I could not agree more, cheap tools can be worse than useless.
