Ultra Masters racers have no need for cash prizes but do appreciate having a unique or silly trophy or swag from a memorable event. I’m pretty sure you could make a trophy out of dried dog poop. We’d all risk cardiac arrest for it. In addition, a unique trophy helps us remember the race. As Ultra Masters, we need all the memory jogs we can get. Did I mention I’m an Ultra Master?

I'm not a mega or ultra anything, but I am a Master and training up this year for the 70+ category on the horizon.
I'm very good at finding a draft on a group ride. I never finish ahead of the main pack.
I don't talk a lot and focus on breathing. Coasting is good, it's when I rest my butt.
Short pulls by the 'old codger' [riding lugged vintage steel (maybe)] makes the younger men feel stronger in their abilities. And hopefully, encouraged to demonstrate their dominance with longer pulls.
Fast gravel roads that have climbs and descents are for young men on bikes with suspension and fat tires.
(I got a taste today on fast gravel with 33mm cyclocross tires and wanted wider.)

Good stuff! K-Dogg has a calm exterior hiding a wicked wry sense of humor. I've seen him, JOM and more of the Gravel Cyclists gang at several gravel rides and races over the past 5 years. First time was at that 2014 Red Clay Ramble where he talks about jinxing himself. I was the ride director of that event. K-Dogg was not alone having bad luck with flats that year. We had two support vehicles loaded down with riders who had thrown in the towel after multiple flat tires. Bigger tires and tubeless setups were much more prevalent the next year and since.
