I was out on a bike path recently and went past two people enjoying their walk, one person was strolling with the other in a wheelchair. I thought of an idea of a type of service that caters only to physically challenged individuals who would be interested in a 20 to 40mi. ride on a local bike path. The type of bike I'm thinking of would be lightweight and resemble a Zigo (or even a pedaling rickshaw) but for grown-ups with an open air cockpit for the passenger and electric assist for the driver. Nearby, there is a business that provides horse back riding for developing the skills of the disabled only, and I'm thinking this would be a similar service but of course be just a passive (but enjoyable) experience for the rider. Other than the Far East and big city rickshaw taxis, do such narrowcast type of businesses exist?

I think you'd want to be a licensed or certified home health care provider to do this (licensing/certification varies state-to-state). At very least you'd want basic first aid training.

I would investigate several different types of bikes, as well as the above mentioned licensing.

We have multiple tandem teams in our area where one person is handicapped in some form or another. One team I see quite regularly, the wife is blind, they use one of the recumbent/upright tandems where she rides down in front and the stoker position is actually the captain. We also have a pretty strong VA rehab program in the area that has tandem teams.

I think it is a neat idea and hope it flies for you.
