Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thought I would share a shot, just finished up the restoration/tweak, on my 79 Schwinn LeTour IV, stripped down and repainted (Dark Cherry-DupliColor). Still running her old Schwinn Approved Weinmann center pulls, 400FF Shimano RD, and Schwinn Approved FD, Super Maxy Crankset, SR Alloy Bars, NEW (used) Alloy 700-23c wheels/ tires, some RX100 hoods, new cables and cleaned up/lubed all the way around, PERFECT way to start the New Year with her, a little Photo Op down by the Bayou. She should be good for another 32 years now! Should add, she is a 14 speed now, moved up from the ranks of 70's 10-speeds! Then again, you say 10 speed today, it means something totally different! :-)

Been a long time since I posted in the 41...been hanging out in the 181. I love my vintage rides but more and more I've been missing a modern ride with brifters, etc.

Well, I rectified that tonight. While a 2001 model bike might still qualify as C&V for some of you here she is....

2001 Klein Quantum in Silver Cloud (exactly as picked up tonight, yes, stem needs to be flipped, blah, blah )

Plans include:

- New stem and bars. I want Ergonovas.
- Swap the 105/5500 triple group for a brand new 105/5700 compact double group that will be in hand in a couple of weeks.
- New saddle as the Selle Italia shape doesn't suit me.

It's simply beautiful...I think anyway.

The modern bike I previously rode was a 54cm CAAD9. My foray into C&V taught me I like a bigger frame...this 58cm is going to be just right based on a few quick measurements, especially with a horizontal top tube.

So, hopefully in a few weeks I'll have her transformed and ready to go for spring (or dry winter days )

Cheers!

Nice found! I missed an opporuntity to acquire one of these Kleins couple years ago due to money shortage. The 53cm frame I checked out felt incredibly light. Can't wait to see your modernized version.

It looks like a fine example of a Colnago Master set up with Campy Daytona or Centaur. Can't make out the paint scheme though. Take a good care of it.

Thanks, I'm so very impressed the quality of the frame....welds and all. Better than the CAAD9 I had previously. And given the aluminum is heat treated after being assembled...very high pitched ping from the tubes. It's interesting.

And for a 58cm bike it's fairly light for aluminum, I think about 19.5 right now. I should drop a half pound or so maybe with the new 105 and the new 3T cockpit. Keeping it alloy though, I don't want to spend the $$$ for carbon cockpit stuff. Wow, 3T stuff has gotten more expensive since I put together my CAAD9 in 2009.

What's your price range? Is that shimano or campy? I kind of like the setup you currently have.. You looking for deeper wheels, more durable rims/spokes or ultra weight loss?

Classic looking! Since you are already Campy get something Campy to go with it, I think that something in silver would look better on that bike

Silver:

Got the group from a great eBay seller...he only had two of the groups and allowed me to put a deposit down on one until I raised the funds for it through sales of other stuff. 50/34 compact, 11-28 cassette, 172.5mm cranks, braze-on FD...as it was listed it was EXACTLY what I wanted. I was amazed.

The group hit USPS today. Unfortunately I have to travel for business all next week so I'll get to know that the group and the bike are just sitting here....waiting...

Well, it'll give me a chance to get BB tools anyway.

Technically they're Rolf Vector Comps that the PO debadged, ok...it's a thin line

EDIT: Oh ok, I guess in 2001 Rolf was made by Trek which means they're CLOSE to Bontrager

In early 1996, Trek Bicycle Corporation licensed Rolf’s Patented Paired Spoke Design™ technology to manufacture and distribute a line of bicycle wheels that were sold under the "Rolf Wheels" brand name. These wheels are easily identified by the name "Rolf Wheels" on the rim decal.

Models include:
  • Vector Pro
  • Vector Comp
  • Sestriere
  • Vector
  • Propel
  • Urraco
  • Dolomite
  • Satellite
These models were built by TREK BICYCLE CORPORATION and were discontinued in December, 2001 when Rolf departed Trek to form his own wheel company called ROLF PRIMA, INC. Although TREK and other companies continue to license our Paired Spoke Design™ technology, Rolf Prima Inc. is a separate entity with no affiliation with Trek. Our products can be easily identified by the brand: Rolf Prima. Rolf Prima wheels share no parts with the older, Trek-built wheels and no parts are interchangeable between the two brands. Rolf Prima CANNOT provide parts or service for "Rolf Wheels" branded wheels.
And BTW, once this is done and a few other bike projects completed the next task will be a new wheelset for the Klein...unless something absolutely killer comes along. These will do for now though.

I just picked this up a couple of days ago. The customer service AeroCat offered was second to none, performing a full bike fitting (which lasted about 3 hours), and throwing on a nicer set of tires because, in their words, "they look better."

The company is small, essentially run by two brothers, Dave and Tim, but the quality is definitely there. The frame is light and responsive, but what impressed me the most was their friendly attitude and desire to help. I would absolutely recommend giving these guys a look if you're anywhere near Indiana.
