Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I never read any hate toward Trek on this site. I only read about people who say they see a lot of hate towards Trek on this site. All these bikes are the same in their subsequent classes.

Here it is this the training wheels.
So, why does your son have a nicer bike than you? How old/tall is he? Because that is definitely like a 58 or 60cm. Super cool looking bike though.

Not sure why people would hate Trek other than they have a broad line of bicycles and maybe it don't have the elite-ness of other high end bikes.

When i decided on my Madone 4.6 I was also looking at a Specialized Roubaix and Cervel RS. I rode all 3 and like the Trek and felt the Roubaix was too leisurely and the Cervelo too aggressive for me.

My son was looking at a Cervelo S5 but since he owns a P2 decided he didn't need a second aero bike. Also he wants the "new" Sram Red and the Cervelo only comes with the old Red. Since he went with the Concept 1 program he purchased the Madone with Sram Force. His plans are to buy a new Red Groupo and install it on the Madone. Then put the Force on the P2 and sell the Ultegra that's currently on the P2.

Also the Madone was significantly cheaper than the Cervelo and being a college student, cost was a factor. He works in a bike shop and was able to purchase the bike through the Mechanic's Purchase program. That's the only way he could afford it.

There's nothing wrong with a Cervelo or Scott or BMC, but for his needs and price range, the Trek was the best fit. As to fit, he had a full professional fit prior to the purchase and the results were he could easily fit on a number of bikes he was looking at.

For many people, they get caught up in the hype of esoteric stuff. A Maserati has much more snob appeal than a Corvette ZR1 but the Corvette will smoke the Maserati in a race at less than half the price. My son does not care about labels which is obvious by the all black paint and minimal logos. He has raced in road races and Crits on a $1100 bike (Specialized Allez) and has beaten others on bikes costing 5 times more.

I know he's done his homework and he'll use this bike to his limits. And when his ability exceed the bike, he'll replace it.

He already took it out for a "shakedown" ride and loves it. Still no tape on the bars and old pedals.

His bike is nicer because he's 21, been racing since he was 14. He's 21, 6'3" and trains for Olympic distance triathlons and generally finish top 10 outright.

I am new to cycling and started 2 years ago because my doctor tole me to loose 30lbs and get healthy or i'll be dead in 5 years. After riding his old mountain bike that he got at 14, i decided to get a road bike and a Madone 4.6 is perfect for me.

His bike is a 58cm and i'm glad he got a full pro fit first because he was thinking 60-61cm which would of been too big.

Here he is at the Lake George Triathlon 2010

Here's my Madone 4.6 when I first got it. I've replaced the white hoods with black, added CF bottle cages and replaced my son's spare red pedals with black Look classics.

For my ability, it's great. I don't need a Maserati, I drive a old VW Beetle for fun.

Very well answered. You have a tall and very talented kid there. It is obvious, you are quite proud of him and should be. They are all very nice bikes, he definitely knows his way around some nice machines. It does help getting shop discounts on things like complete bikes.

Apologies, but I took a few more of my Dolan! I might have a few £££ to spare at the end of this month and that's when a slightly longer stem goes on and some spacers come out - along with the steerer being cut by my LBS.

I like that Dolan. I see their frames on pbk.com from time to time and daydreamed about getting one of their track frames.

Thanks. The frame rides really well. I haven't tried one of their track frames, but Terry Dolan is a very reputable frame-builder... Maybe you should make those daydreams become reality!

He loves the bike course, there's a killer climb than he attacks and then a long high speed down hill where you hit 50mph. He has no fear where others are on the brakes.

It's great that your son races and can afford nice bikes, but it's getting kinda tiring hearing you brag about your kid.

At least he is somewhat responsible for making that kid. There are people here that go on and on about a bike that they have nothing to do with but paying for it.

My guess is he can't afford, since the father is pointing out how he is happy with less (another backwards brag).....

Actually he can afford it, he's been working since he was 15 at a local bike shop. All his bikes he's purchased with his with is own money. Currently he's working 2 jobs, at a bike shop at college and as a substitute teacher at the local middle school. All this while attend college. I could go on, but there's not enough room on this site.

Back to the topic, the Cervelo S2 is a awesome looking bike. The black is very high tech with just enough color to pop and understated decals.

Very sharp looking and i bet it rides great.
