Road Rage- 5000 lb Dodge Pickup vs a 20 Bicycle
Rodney Redneck pulled me over this morning and gave me a tongue lashing about riding my bicycle on the road. (He had to slow down to avoid hitting me.) When I pointed to the bicycle warning signs and told him I had every right to be on the road he told me he would run over me. He then called the police and told them "I was riding in the middle of the road" but even after the police told him he was wrong and it was his obligation to Stop or Slow down and move over, Rodney was not satisfied. You can't argue with stupid.
It is hard to imagine people could be so stupid but they really are and it makes me wonder if I should give this up. True; it is only one in a thousand but this guy was nuts and I think he is dangerous beyond reason or measure.
It is so silly, so totally immature for a grown man to behave this way. He had a Temper tantrum because he had to slow his vehicle down. If I had met this uninformed, impatiens person on the side walk or in a grocery store I would bet he would have gone out of his way, the way most people do, to be polite and courteous. It just does not make sense and now I fear for my life.

No, don't give it up. The benefits, both physical and mental, far outweigh the occasional idiot. It's good the police came. He is now 'on notice' in case he ever has another bad day.

At least you'll have the satisfaction knowing that you were in the right and the driver was the idiot, if you ever happen to get run over and end up paralyzed or croak. At least, I like to think that way.

If it's not too late, you should also report the incident. If he does continue to harass people, that sort of thing can be used as evidence against him.

It has been widely reported that there is little intelligent life on planet Earth. You now can confirm those reports based on your own experience.

We have people honk and yell. If they stop, I offer to call the police and they can decide if I am doing something wrong or don't belong there.
So far everyone has then moved along.

Also, people like that tend to eventually weed themselves out of the gene pool. Or else, they end up getting the floor mopped with their head by some bigger badder redneck and end up learning to keep their mouths shut.

wow. i think i would look into filing charges. I mean what would happen if you said to the idiot " i am going to shoot you" I know this sounds extreme, but it is criminal for him to have talked to you like that.

I wouldn't have had the patience to stand there listening. I'd tell him to have a nice day and then continue my ride.

With the present day fad of "coaling" bikers with diesel exhaust, I have noticed a rise across the board with pickups revving and tromping down as they go by me. Just had another one do this not 20min ago downtown.

All that black stuff coming out of the exhaust is particulate matter. All of it doesn't come out the tail pipe. Some accumulates in the muffler and eventually clogs it up requiring a premature replacement.
Happier now?

+1. What could you possibly hope to gain by engaging that jerk?

I'm thinking there's going to be some karma connected to that one:

A lot of diesel trucks where I ride and that does happen to me, but I assume it's usually inadvertent. Most of the drivers do give me plenty of room, so I don't think they're being aggressive.

A week ago Saturday, a friend and I were about 38 miles into a 42 miler when we passed a truck waiting to pull out onto the road we were riding, from the right. My friend was ahead and made eye contact with the driver as he went by. I was about 10 feet behind but had to swerve to avoid being hit by the front right fender of his truck when he gunned it into the road as I was in front of it. I initially thought he didn't see me/us, but I've changed my mind and agree with my friend: He was just a jerk (or some other equally appropriate description).
Fortunately, such occurrences have been rare for me.
