Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Purchased this project bike from an auto insurance company. Frame is my size without any cracks or bents. However, computer is missing; front wheel needs to be trued; rear wheel needs to be rebuilt; dropout and front derailleur need to be replaced. The rest of the bike looks exceptionally good. Shift levers still have the protective clear plastic sheet. No scratches at all! I paid $5XX. Figured another $300-500 should bring it to very good shape.
Remark: Hope the previous owner will recover fully very soon. The bike didn't mess up totally so he should be ok.

You paid $5xx for that? Jeez, you got a steal. That rear wheel alone (if it still works) is almost worth that.

Both wheels spin very smooth. I am taking a chance. If it doesn't work after the wheel is rebuilt, I will waste maybe $100 on the computer. BTW, the hub is labelled "SL".

It looks like a wireless, but I think the latest wired ones looked like that as well. I'm guessing it's wired since it has a pickup on the chainstay.

1993 cannondale r900 2.8

bought used in may, put about 1000 miles on it since. my first real road bike (was into mtb, then recently fg). shimano 600 throughout. 39/53 x 12/21 gearing (terrible for climbing). about 21lbs as pictured.

I climb with the same gearing and it has never been so bad it made me want a new rear cassette or a compact crank.

you just need to climb more

You're either incredibly strong, or you've never actually climbed anything real, if you think a 39/21 is a good climbing setup.

For short, steep stuff it's fine. I don't know about the OP, but I've never needed anything easier than a 39x23. Call me a liar, but I've tackled some pretty rough stuff without having to delve into the 23 tooth.

Not calling you a liar, but 39x21 won't really cut it for optimal cadence on some stuff. Look at the gear ratios being run at EC. That's an extreme example, but no one finishes that race with a smallest gear of 39x21

A little old, but a good entry bike in it's day.

I've got a picture Lance climbing a steep hill in the big chainring...but not many can climb like Lance. it looks like you live in ohio...I guess a 21 or 23 will work for climbs there...but try it around the san francisco bay area.

Niiiiccceee. I had an 1983 Peugeot Course that I rode the snot out of! Loved that bike ... I donated it to the Katrina bike program a few years back when I hadn't ridden it in a few (ok quite a few years) but now I regret giving it away ...

like you, I have been considering selling mine to help fund a Ridley Damocles that I lust for, but I think I'll just save more money and keep it.
That looks great with the front end painted. Yes save your money, and keep your Trek. I think the 2001 model 5200 USPS are probably the best looking. Lots of good looking bikes on here, both newer, and older. I guess I am getting old, I am starting to find more appreciation for the older stuff.

39x21 would still be an improvement over the 42x21 I'm riding now! That was plenty low 20 years ago when I was riding great gonzo all the time, but as a deskbound 40something looking at his first serious riding in all those years? I think I wanna scoot that low gear down just a tad.

That bit at mile 60ish on the Pelotonia was pretty fun, eh?

Mohican... I think there's a big 24 hour moutain bike thing going on there this weekend, right?

Yeah, that climb was fun. Luckily the terrain around here had me more prepared than most of the riders around me during it.

As for the 24hr, yeah I've got friends riding in that event. I hope to stop by and watch a bit.

Friend of mine is a mountain biker, he's doing the 24 hour one. Got a new single speed he using and his normal reg. mtn bike. Can't say I know much about up there, except I think there's some snowskiing around there, I think?

Plus, head down to the appalachian bits of OH, and yeah, you'll be climbing your ass off, over and over again.

I try to 'attack' every hill/climb/overpass/whatever I can so when it came to the pelotonia, I basically spent my time on that hill weaving through everyone who was walking! No compact, no triple, made it up a little beat, but just fine.

Yeah, we have Snowtrails, or Icetrails as I call it. My hilly route I usually take goes right passed it.

The Appalachians are no joke. That's where I was quad ridding. It looked epic down there.

There weren't too many walking. I did pass a good bit of stragglers though. My guess is allot of them were city riders, that don't do many hills. I did it with 39-25, kept steady, stayed in the saddle, and stayed passing people. I saw quite a few walkers on the big hill before Nelsonville. Fatigue was really starting to set in on them. I felt great though. It was my first century, and I still hit 28mph through the finish line.
