choosing BB spindle length (again..) (Italian Concorde // Gipiemme crankset)
Hi!
First post!
I've been able to make it alone till now but my problem seems now to much personal to find the actual correct answer..
I've bought a Concorde/Ciocc Aquila frame from early 80's i try to build up for this spring.
It has an Italian BB thread, and i have a Gipiemme Crono Sprint double crankset to put on.
Velobase indicate a BB length of 113mm for this crank. Does it says i definitely have to use a 113mm BB, that i found probably too easy... And so that an Edco Italian BB with a 122mm spindle won't fit, even with its double adjusting cups?
I'd really like to use this Edco BB as i'm trying to get an Edco groupset on it.. but as i have this Gipiemme crankset i'd be glad to choose the 113mm Crono Sprint BB if this is a better fit..
And finally, if it isn't as simple as that, once i'll get the crankset how could i measure precisely the optimal spindle length as i still don't know exactly how much tapers get far in the crank..? Is it like the bottom of the dust cap hole to the middle of my seat tube minus something (space between spindle end bottom of dust cap hole) x2 ?
Thank you for making me smarter
and excuse my English gram i'm French...

You could probably make it work with the 122 Edco, but it won't be ideal. But if you have an opportunity to get a 113 Gipiemme, why not go for it?

In fact i've got an opportunity for an Edco one..
And buying a 113mm spindle don't guarantee me not to have my chainring touching my chainline tube right?

Nice post - Welcome to the Forum - Again - I am not exactly sure, but if your going to go loose ball you might want to consider the 5S-B - It gives you allot of leeway - You may have to try each side to find out which one is better for your type set up - Here is and old discussion from 2010...
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...acket-headache
The 5S-B is also the spindle to use when converting over from cottered crank...
Hold the press... I could be all wrong here - Rats - You could need a 70c-120 like a Campy - Its spindle length is 115mm - Did you state your shell width?

Sutherlands doesn't have a listing for any Gipiemme, but I'm guessing that it's such a close copy of a Campy NR/SR thick cup BB and since that unit takes a 112 for BSC double or 115 for Italian double that the 113 sounds like the right spindle length. Sutherlands says an Edco 120 is for a triple so I'd bet a 122 is for an Italian BB triple...not a good bet to fit with this GPM double crank.
An easy cheap experiment might be: buy a Miche sealed BB. They are cheap, sealed and use an ISO taper (probably a good fit to the GPM crank) and the cups allow a little side-to-side chainline adjustment. Not Edco quality, but not bad for the price, they sell a 70x 115 for Italian doubles.

it's a 70mm wide BB shell zandoval (Italian!)
Thanks unworthy! This is this one? But i think i'd prefer give this money to my bike shop to let them figure this out instead of buying this one knowing i'll throw it away to install a GPM later...
But do you think those manufacturer advised sizes (113mm // double crank of the same brand) garantee to be able to install it on any frame? knowing moreover this crank comes with a 53t chainring wich must be a bit wider than common 52t chainrings...

Yes, that Miche Primato is the unit I was recommending...we can usually buy them for less than $39.99 in the US (I've bought one for as low as $26) and they really are not bad quality. I don't think an old GPM "open" style BB with ball bearings in a cage will be much better in actual use, and an Edco will probably have some nicer sealed cartridge bearings (maybe SKF or F.A.G. instead of the Slovakian made bearings that Miche sources) but if you find one in the correct spindle length I know it will cost you a LOT more than $39.
Yes, the spindle length will probably give you the correct chainline given the following:
you are using it with the proper crank it's designed to fit (a double with "normal" chainrings and the same taper, ISO, JIS, Campy, etc. has to match with the spindle)
The frame is about the same vintage so the rear spacing isn't radically different from that which it was designed for...since you're using a GPM double crank on a Concorde from the '80s (Italian BB shell and 126 rear spacing, right?) all the parameters fit so a 113 to 115 spindle with ISO taper will work...99% certain.
You have a bit of "wiggle room" in that spindle length range, and that's where a unit like the Miche (and the Edco) that you can move a little sideways can help you fine-tune the chainline.

The 115mm Miche Primato should work for you. Universal Cycles has it for $35. That's way more than I paid for mine a couple of years ago, but everything has gone up. The adjustable chainline makes it easier. I also have an EDCO. It's nicer and lighter.

thanks a lot you two!
My LBS uses to work with Velo Orange parts.. Should probably be as good as this Miche without the double asjusting cups but it would be their work to make it fit..
Which lenght is your Edco spindle Grand Bois? I seems to have only 122 ones.. just to know if i can hope for one wich could fit my set-up.. [edit] not at all, there's a 250$ 116mm spindle on ebay right now..

the only problem with the Velo Orange BB (which is a fine unit for the price) is that all their spindles are JIS (Japanese standard) taper regardless of the cup threading.
That taper would not be the ideal fit on a Gipiemme crank, but your LBS might be able to make it all work together...it's not impossible, just a fussy trial-and-error job and they will need BB shell spacers.

it's just i love my LBS but they don't have any vintage part.. So either i search for the gem by myself (with your help <3 ) or i'll let them install something cheaper but letting them dealing with the fit thing! (one point with JIS VO spindles!)
Thanks for all, i'll keep you informed
