What did you just buy for your gravel bike?

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

What did you just buy for your gravel bike?

I did not change the rear drivetrain to GRX, only the front. The rear is the original 9-speed Sora derailleur and both STI levers are are the original Sora 9-speed levers. I changed out the crank to the GRX 10-speed along with the front derailleur and bottom bracket. This is my rain / winter commuter, and those threaded external Shimano bottom brackets are bombproof! The GRX chainline is also pushed out a couple of mm up front, putting the chainline in a more desirable position allowing for full usage of gearing (along with the slightly narrower 10 speed chain) without chain rubbing up front - this rubbing had always bothered me with the original crank and bb setup.
I am happy with the GRX, definitely. The build quality is sturdy, and a bit stiffer at the cranks than the original setup. I am sure the rest of the lineup is nice, but. I didn't see the need to drop a ton of extra cash "upgrading" other things on the bike that are perfectly adequate for me.
If you wanted to to put full 10 speed on your rig, it is perfectly feasible, and you would also need the new GRX STI levers as well as the rear derailleur. A new 10-speed cassette would be needed and would fit on your existing wheel freehub without issue.

After a few years it was time to upgrade from my 44cm EA70 to something wider with more flare in the drops, but still straight in the hooks so my levers weren't pointing funny directions. My test ride makes me wish I had swapped sooner.

New Pedal Day

DMR V-Twin pedal for my Spez Diverge, quite weighty but they provide lots of customization in the forms of shims and pins to clipped your feet better on the pedal. I don’t use them yet, found them easy enough to clipped and unclipped just without and the platform is comfortable enough for randonneuring.

Why the Juins over the TRP Hy/Rds? The Hy/Rds are excellent, well proven and way less expensive...

If you like these, try the Terreno Drys. Every bit as fast but a bit more versatile and better traction on gravel. I have about 100 miles on a set of the Drys in 650b and they are really fast and offer a bit more grip in light mud/sand/gravel.

I just like trying new and different things, plus they were not much more when I purchased them. $230 shipped for the pair on ebay from a US seller. Last I looked TRP's come singly and about $100 each(?). I like them better than the HY/RD's on a bike I borrowed now that I have ridden with them for a while . It even had compressionless housing, whereas mine just has the factory Jagwire LEX.

Are hyrd brakes 4 piston like the juin brakes you are replying to?

I bought juin f1 brakes for my recent gravel build because they are smaller, lighter, and less expensive compared to the hyrd calipers.
Trifecta right there.
The hyrds were $110 more and significantly larger in size.
They work great so far. I want to slow down and they slow me down. I want to stop and they stop me. Pretty straight forward.

i bought brake pads one set for my TRP HY/RD calipers. I need to buy a second set to have spares ready. I also bought an origin 8 stub to add a light for winter commuting on the side of my fork.

I replaced my worn 700x45 Riddlers with the 45mm Ramblers this spring...loved the Riddlers, just wanted to try something different. Both tires are great, I think for my gravel riding 45mm might be the ideal width.

HED Belgium+ 650b rims

CX-Ray Spokes

RS770 hubs

Applying grease to spoke nipple holes in rim...

Spokes ready, and black brass nipples

Hub logo through valve hole.

Wheels laced, 3-cross.

1569g, or 1639g with the axles.

Still need to tension and true them, but I'm waiting for a bladed spoke holder tool thingy to arrive.

I'm really bad at being a weight weenie. I set out on this build intending to make something considerably lighter than the Stumpy, but I keep making non-weight-saving choices. 32H front and rear? Brass nipples?
I just installed my bottle cages, and I used the steel bolts that came on the frame instead of the aluminum bolts that came with the cages. That was a 7g decision!

I guess I'll see where I end up.

Wheels look great! I'm about to put together my first set with Shimano R7070 hubs and Pacenti Forza Disc rims. I refused to pay the extra $15 for black brass nipples so I'm going black on black on black on silver.

Nice wheel build. I wanted to get my 650b wheels re-built from QR to TA but I think I'll just buy a new set. Oh how difficult it is to find not so pricey 650b wheels with a 12mm front hub

Check out the Velomine website. They seem to have good deals on wheels and even though some may be 15mm thru axles you may be able to get an adapter or different end caps.

Welp, thanks for the recommendation. I got these Mercury Ryde Edge M30 650B wheels for under $275 + Shipping. And 12x100mm front hub

This is the part where I charge headfirst into what is most likely a really, really bad idea.

RX800-series hydraulic disc brifters for 1x11 mechanical drivetrain.

GRX810 (2x11) rear derailleur.

And an 11-32 cassette to go with.

A nice shiny modern Dura-Ace box...

...which, naturally, contains a friction shifter.

Okay, wasn't sure what the advantages were. I thought the Juins were about $100 more for the pair... They do look really light and pretty sleek compared to the Hy/RDs which I think are one large cylinder per side...

Pretty excited to get this second wheelset done.

DT Swiss R32 Spline Disc
Avid G3CL 160
Vittoria Rubino Pro All Round 700x28
Sram 11-36 (stolen from stock wheelset, going 11-42 there)

Schwalbe G One Speed All-Round 700x38 on factory wheels to replace the Panaracers Comets.

Oh, and don't forget the Cinelli blue cork bar tape.
Ready for the winter!
This build made me think, you could update the deraileur to the 10 speed GRX and still run your current STI and casette, so you would gain the benefits of a clutch derraileur.

Installed a set of Vee Rubber Speedster 26x2.125" tires today. I turned my old Trek 920 into a budget drop bar gravel bike for when I want fat tires instead of a third wheelset for my Jamis, but I have found the pickings are slim for decent, affordable, tubeless 26" gravel appropriate tires. First ride impression is mostly positive, with a bit of annoying self steer at low pressures being the only negative.

Today I took advantage of the REI 20% coupon to add a new Kuat NV 2.0 rack to carry my Niner to far away gravel. I’m very impressed with the quality and ease of function on the Kuat. It’s rock solid with zero wobble.

More Tires: Spesh Fast Trak 650b (27.5) x 2.0

On the 30mm rims the casing stretches to 54.5mm at 40 PSI. I am heavier so that pressure is typical. I might play around with my tire pressures to see how low I can run w/o being too inefficient on road.

Shininess starts with the bottom bracket. If the bottom bracket isn't shiny, the bike will never look shiny. Probably. Better safe than sorry, right?

Installed in the frame, with a spacer added to set spindle asymmetry.
